Cats are absolved from mistakes and faults just inherently. 

Everyone makes mistakes. A day of purrfect ease could be ripped under you in the blink of an eye. You stroll along and suddenly you find that you've said the worst thing at the worst time. You never really know yourself until you're met with the moment where intention and impact accidently miss each other, and all you can do is stand there, replaying it in your head long after the moment has passed. We carry these moments like weights at the gym. We analyze them, assign meaning, and build narratives around them, whether they're true or not. Our narratives dictate our whole world, and let us decide our thoughts and actions. A single mistake can cost a whole relationship, job, or your sense of self. 

But cats? Cats never feel the shame, the guilt, or the pressure that humans feel. We're so riddled with lamentations and struggles from the slightest things, while cats could maliciously destroy a prized possession and just go to their couch throne for a nap immediately afterwards. And it's not that they're truly malicious, mean, or have ill-intentions. But their whole system of life is built around them – you're merely the plaything in the corner of their life that feeds them and lets them have the comfort they deserve. Cats live completely unburdened by this internal trial. A cat can knock a glass off the table, stare directly into your soul, and walk away without a shred of remorse. Not because they are careless, but because they do not equate mistakes with identity. The action happens. The moment passes. Life continues. There is no moral residue.

Cats play the victim, they play docile and delicate at the times when they know they've done wrong. They look at you with big eyes, airplane ears, and a sense of innocence after they just knocked your keys off the table, broke your favorite mug, and destroyed all the toilet paper on the roll in the bathroom. And what are you to do? You have to just let them do their implicit apology, their feigned sadness, and their adorable manipulation on your heartstrings. 

We don't care what others think, as far as we're concerned, as soon as August ends and September begins, spooky season is in full swing.

We can already hear what all the other sceptics have to say: "It's not even cold yet", "It's way too early for Halloween decorations", "We haven't even gone to the beach once yet"… All excuses to ignore the sign that the best season of all is finally upon us: Fall.

While summer is all fun and games, and is full of special activities we truly enjoy, it does not compare to the season that follows and brings with it the coziest weather of them all. Fall is the winner in every department, from the clothes, the orange trees and falling leaves, the smell of the first rain of the season, and the absolutely best holidays of the year. The streets go quieter as kids return to school, people start planning their Halloween costumes and discuss where and with whom they will spend Thanksgiving this year, and we simply soak up every last minute of all that fun. It truly is the most wonderful time of the year.

We are not the only ones in our household excited about this shift in the air. We can already see how the slight shift in the weather is affecting our cats. While they might not be as excited as we are about Halloween costumes, we know they can't wait for the cold AC to turn off for the final time this year, and for the temperatures to finally drop enough for all the cozy blankets and heaters to come out of their hiding place. All they want is a nice, long snuggle session in bed, where we don't kick them off us when their furr gets too hot to bear. We can't wait to pull out a good book, some hot chocolate, and get super cozy until the sun goes down.

He deserves more than rain and cold. 

With September here in full swing, rain might just be around the corner for you. Summer felt like it lasted forever, and whether you like the heat or the cold, the fact remains that each year the skies oscillate between temperatures. In the story below, a little white kitten was found outside in the rain, freezing cold, and in a dish full of water! How awful for this poor little thing. The kind person who found him immediately rescued him from the harsh environment outside and took him home. After a couple vet visits the two are housemates. This little guy got what he deserves, which is the warmth of a real home, and a pawrent to take care of him instead of a dish of water. 

Just when they thought their cat-rescuing days were behind them, the CDS sent assignment number four.

After three cats and more than two years away from fostering and rescuing, this family had officially decided their household was full. Three kitties were plenty, and adding another was definitely not part of the plan.

Unfortunately, nobody informed the Cat Distribution System.

A little kitten suddenly appeared at the husband's workplace, and no one was quite sure how she got there. They suspect she may have hitched a ride with a trucker or possibly been dumped. Either way, after a month of searching and finding no owner, it became pretty clear this little girl was on her own.

At first, she kept her distance. But slowly, she started warming up to the husband, and naturally, he started falling for her too. It probably didn't hurt that his wife began sending him to work armed with cat food. Nothing builds a feline friendship quite like becoming the person who brings dinner.

Eventually, he announced that he was going to try catching her. The next day, he simply scooped her up and brought her home. So much for that break from adopting!

Even with three resident cats waiting at home, the approximately 4-month-old kitten fit in almost immediately. After just one night, her new pawrent was already declaring, "Yeah, this is my baby." Once those words come out, there's no pretending this is temporary anymore.

The little newcomer is now fully vetted, preparing to be spayed, and officially part of a four-cat household that was absolutely supposed to stop at three.

This also happens to be the fourth time the CDS has made a delivery to this family, so maybe they should stop acting surprised.

The Cat Distribution System saw two experienced rescuers taking a well-earned break and decided their application for retirement had been denied.

Nothing feels better than a long weekend after another exhausting week of being employed by absolutely nobody.

Labor Day weekend is finally here, which means hardworking hoomans everywhere get a much-needed break from emails, meetings, commutes, and pretending to look busy until 5 PM. Cats, naturally, will also be taking the weekend off. From what, exactly? We're still trying to figure that out.

Being a full-time feline is apparently exhausting work. There are sunbeams to nap in, cardboard boxes to inspect, countertops to patrol, and hoomans who require constant supervision. Someone has to make sure dinner arrives on time, and that responsibility certainly isn't going to handle itself.

So this Labor Day weekend, cats are doing what they do best: absolutely nothing.

While their pawrents celebrate a few precious days away from work, these unemployed little freeloaders will be joining the festivities like they've been clocking 40-hour weeks all year. Expect plenty of sleeping in, afternoon naps to recover from sleeping in, and maybe a trip to the kitchen for a well-earned snack. It's called work-life balance, look it up.

Of course, cats have perfected the long weekend lifestyle. No alarms. No deadlines. No Sunday scaries. Their biggest Monday concern is whether to move from the couch to the bed or squeeze in another nap before dinner. Frankly, we could learn something from them.

The only labor happening around here belongs to the hoomans opening treat bags, scooping litter boxes, and moving approximately three inches over on the couch because His Royal Floofiness needs more room.

If cats can ignore you when you want to pet them, then you can ignore a yucky Monday morning.

We learn a lot from cats when you have one enter your life. When you adopt a cat, you essentially let a creature control every part of your existence - and happily doing so. And by doing that, by accepting a feline overlord unto you, you learn from them. And there's a lot for a cat to teach. For example, when your cat decides it's nap time, they nap. It doesn't matter what's going on; they take time for themselves to relax and recharge - and that's an important lesson.

So when they ignore you when you call them just because you wanted to pet them at that very moment, it's a lesson to be learned about Monday mornings. Nobody loves a Monday morning. The workweek is starting, the coffee always feels stale, and you have to leave your cat behind at home while you go to work. It's all very meh, to say the least. But then, at times like these, you can remember your cat choosing actively to ignore you, still facing away and using one ear as a satellite dish to turn your way, only to turn it away again - and ignore everything annoying about a Monday morning. Why? Because. That's the cat way.

Traveling with cats on an airplane can be a headache, especially when your cat demands first class, but you only buy them an economy ticket. 

Unless you can afford a $6,000+ private pet airline ticket, traveling with any pet is an arduous journey. Cats, simply because they're generally smaller and can come with you in the cabin of the plane, are generally easier, but it still adds stress and extra planning to any plane ride. You have to buy a pre-approved travel carrier (and you know each airline has different requirements), pack some litter to make a portable litter box when you can find time to let them use it, hopefully get them to eat something, and somehow find a way to keep them calm from the time you leave home to the time you arrive at your destination.

In general, I think most people choose to leave their cats at home when traveling simply for these reasons. But, there are those who insist on taking their cats with them, and for the most part, all I can say is, "More power to you." I'm always happy to see a cat in a carrier on a plane, but not if it's mine. I'm already an anxious purrson, and I'm pretty sure I would be more nervous to fly with my cats than they would be to fly themselves.

Mostly, I would want to break the rules to take my cat out of the carrier and comfort them. I wouldn't be able to resist trying to make the situation better, and one of my cats would definitely make a run for it as soon as I opened the carrier, like the cat from @islswj's post on Threads, Instagram's text-based social media platform that is similar to X.

The owner and their cat were on a United Airlines flight when their cat escaped, snuck all the way up to the front, and scratched a fellow passenger. With all the chaos that followed, the aircraft was forced to return back to the airport while the flight attendant scooped up the cat, and attempted to return it to its owner. I'm pretty sure it was just trying to sneak into first class because it wanted the tuna option for lunch.

Can't blame a kitty for trying, right?

If you're going to abandon a box full of kittens on someone's property, just leave them at the front door, not in a hidden place at the back. 

Taking care of seven newborn kittens would be a lot of work for anyone, we understand that. And if you rescued a cat who turned out to be pregnant or if a pregnant cat broke into your home to have her babies, we would understand why you might not feel ready to take on the responsibility. We just wish that people in these situations made better decisions for the babies. If you're already putting the seven kittens in a box and placing them on someone else's property, just put them at the front door. Don't hide them in some spot in the back where they might not be found. 

It was luck that made DjBizwy on Reddit find these cats. He calls it divine intervention. We call it the CDS. Either way, the fact that they came across these kittens was a matter of chance. As they were cutting down a tree on their farm, they heard the meows of a bunch of kittens and found seven kittens abandoned in a box with a blanket folded underneath them. In the heat, with no food, water or anyone to care for them, these kittens could have been dehydrated in no time. Instead, they were saved, and all found homes.

Foster fail stories are amongst the best feline adoption stories out there. This part of the story tells a different kind of tale. One which shows just how hard and confusing it can be for everyone involved when a stray cat is brought into their first home. But most of all it is a story that reminds us that sometimes less is more and when we let things breathe, our issues can often settle themselves.

 

Growing up with a cat is a meowgical thing this little girl is going to experience, all thanks to her dad, who saved one kitten from a frightful fate on the streets.

I never grew up with a cat. Now that I'm an adult cat mom, I kind of wish I have. I always liked cats, even though I asked for a dog for my birthday from around age 5 until my preteen years. I was just a victim of the propaganda known as "cats don't really like anyone, they're super independent." But there was a street cat that a neighbor and I took care of, and she was the best. Her name was Kishta, and I loved giving her food and pets as a kid. But I never had a cat of my own growing up, and that's a shame - it might've made me realise how loving cats are earlier in life.

But this is not just about me - this is about kids everywhere, who deserve to experience growing up with the best, most loving companion ever. And this is exactly what u/BellDisastrous9390's daughter is going to experience, thanks to his keen eyes and big heart. He saw this one orange kitten, sickly and evading speeding cars that almost ran him over, and knew this was an unacceptable situation. He didn't just realise that this was no place for a kitten, but that he was going to do the best thing about it - he was going to add the little orange kitten to his family.

Thanks to this dad's big heart, a kitten is saved. But that's not all. Because you know what they say - the Cat Distribution System works in mysterious ways. This mysterious body, entity, agency, or whatever they/it are/is, made sure to make the match as pawfessionally as possible. They didn't just send a kitten to his forever home, but also made sure the girl is going to grow up with a cat - which is the best gift anyone could ever give a kid. I will never have the chance to "grow up" again with a cat by my side, but at least other kids around the world get to experience this meowgical thing.

Taking good pictures of black cats can be quite a challenge. 

Something that every black cat owner learns very quickly is that taking cute pictures of black cats… is a challenge. And it's not because they are not cute. We see them every day. We know that black cats are adorable. Their expressions, their itty bitty black paws, their striking eyes. We see it. Our phones just… have a hard time capturing it. And more than that, for some reason, black cats seem to always find the darkest spot in the house and decide that spot is their favorite one. 

Therefore, not only do our phones have a hard time capturing our black cats' features, but when we take a picture of our black cat on a dark surface, it's like the cat is not even there at all. And although that can be a bummer when you want to capture your cat being cute on camera, it also gives us some of the most iconic camouflage cat pictures ever. When bringing a cat to a shelter, it is crucial to look up that shelter's policies. 

Cat shelters, generally, are beautiful places. They are places full of the kindest people with the best of intentions. People who want to take care of cats who need their help the most. People who want to find as many cats forever homes as possible. We look at shelters as safe places, places that we recommend people bring cats to - if they rescue a cat and can't keep it or if they need to surrender a cat for any reason. Shelters are better than abandoning a cat in need on the street. Right? Almost. 

No-k*ll shelters are the ones that you actually want to look for. These are the places where euthanasia is used as a last-last resort, only if the animal is suffering and cannot be helped. Those are places where, even if funds are low and adopters are not coming, euthanasia will not be used on a healthy animal. In our minds, when we write about cats being surrendered to shelters, we always assume it's a no-k*ll shelter that they are being brought to. We do it not because we don't know better, but because it makes us feel better to ignore this issue. Bringing a cat to a shelter is better than dumping it outside. It gives them an actual chance. 

But the problem is there, and "k*ll shelters" exist, unfortunately. That's where today's story is set. In a place like that. But even in places like that, good people exist. And the healthy cat that was saved from euthanasia in this story was saved by one of these good people.

There is a certain magic that comes with the arrival of fall. Nothing destroys household peace faster than one cat looking at another cat slightly wrong.

Living with multiple cats means accepting that peace can disappear at any moment, usually for reasons no human could possibly understand. One minute, your kitties are peacefully sharing the couch like the best of furriends. The next, somebody puts one paw in the wrong place and suddenly you've got ringside seats to the feline fight of the century.

There's usually a warning before the paws start flying. One cat stares. The other stares back. Ears slowly flatten, tails start twitching, and neither party is willing to surrender an inch of territory. You can practically hear dramatic Western showdown music playing in the background. Then somebody throws the first smack, and it's officially on.

Cat fights have everything you could want from quality entertainment: dramatic tackles, rapid-fire paw slaps, surprise attacks, bunny kicks, and enough cattitude to fill an entire wrestling arena. Sometimes the reason for the disagreement is obvious. Someone stole the favorite sleeping spot, got too close to dinner, or dared to receive more attention from the hooman. Other times, the crime appears to be looking in another cat's general direction.

And while these feisty felines probably think they look absolutely terrifying, photographs tell a very different story. Catch a kitty mid-battle and suddenly nature's fierce little predator looks completely ridiculous. Mouths are hanging open, paws are frozen in bizarre positions, bodies are twisting in ways that shouldn't be physically possible, and at least one participant looks deeply surprised by how the situation has unfolded.

The funniest part is how quickly the beef can disappear. These sworn enemies can spend five minutes throwing paws before casually walking away, grooming themselves, and acting like nothing happened. By bedtime, they might even be cuddling again.

Apparently, feline grudges have a very short shelf life. Good thing, because there's always another fight scheduled for tomorrow.

The Cat Distribution System took two years to make this delivery, but Miso needed less than a minute to know she was home.

Some people wait years for the Cat Distribution System to finally notice them. After two years of patiently waiting for an assignment, one hopeful cat lover finally got theirs, and apparently the CDS decided to make the delivery impossible to ignore.

A tiny stray suddenly scurried across their backyard and latched directly onto their pants. Naturally, they stopped to give her some pets. That was all the invitation this little girl needed.

She immediately climbed all the way up onto their neck.

At that point, what exactly are you supposed to do? The cat has chosen you. The paperwork is basically complete.

The newly assigned kitten came home and wasted absolutely no time settling in. Despite living outside, she was incredibly affectionate, well-behaved, and completely comfortable with her new hooman. She even curled up with them for an entire night of sleep.

Apparently, this wasn't quite as spontaneous on the kitten's end as it seemed. She was found in the backyard, leading her new pawrent to suspect she may have been watching them for a few days before finally making her move. We love a kitty who does her research before choosing a family.

She's since been named Miso, after miso soup, because her coloring reminded her new pawrent of tofu and soup. We can't argue with that logic.

Miso is playful, ridiculously affectionate, and especially fond of sleeping directly on top of her chosen human. Most surprising is just how quickly she adjusted. There was practically no nervous introduction period at all. Within less than a minute, Miso seemed ready to accept that this was her home now.

After two years of waiting for the CDS to send an assignment, getting a kitten who literally climbed onto her new pawrent and refused to leave feels like a pretty purrfect delivery.
