The favorite toy earns its place through countless zoomies, surprise pounces, and late-night play sessions. Before long, it starts appearing everywhere. One morning it's waiting outside the bedroom door. Later it's sitting in the middle of the hallway. By bedtime, it has somehow found its way onto the couch. It's less of a toy and more of a tiny companion that follows the cat through every part of the day.

Cats carry these little treasures with so much pride that you'd think they'd just returned from a successful hunting expedition. The toy dangles from their mouth as they march through the house, completely pleased with themselves, ready for everyone to admire their latest accomplishment. No audience is required, but they'll gladly accept one.

The best part is that these beloved toys slowly become part of the family too. Everyone recognizes them on sight. Everyone knows not to throw them away, no matter how worn out they look. They may be missing feathers, stuffing, or an eye, but they're still priceless in the eyes of the tiny predator who claimed them.

Heartbreak is not reserved for lovers

Those of us who were always very social have gotten used to the feeling of losing a friend; that specific kind of grief has become like a known path we can almost walk with our eyes closed. Culturally, we treat it as something different from grieving a romance, and in some points it is, but in others it's just the same. Lovers are all different from one another, and so are friendships; ergo, all those grievances are different from each other. Every surprise third cat starts out as a cat you're definitely not keeping.

Every cat owner has a story about how they got their cat. Some visit shelters. Some answer adoption listings. And then there are the stories that came straight from Reddit's r/CatDistributionSystem subreddit, where a cat simply appears and decides the matter for everyone involved.

This particular feline had been surviving on Baltimore alley trash and mice while hanging around the neighborhood for several days. Neighbors had spotted her, but nobody could get close enough to help. She kept her distance and seemed determined to stay that way.

How many last-minute cancellations can a friendship survive before resentment starts to take over?

This story resonated with me in ways I cannot even explain. Not because I'm standing with the OP, but the complete opposite. I'm actually like the friend, Mary. I tend to cancel plans pretty often whenever I don't feel like assisting, and I never feel bad about it. My friends had complained in the past, but never seriously. So, when I encountered this story, I felt shocked because maybe my friends are actually angry at my attitude. I mean, of course, I apologize, and I never do it if I know it's a special day, or a birthday, or something like that. But, if I have a casual coffee date with a friend, and if that day my social battery is running low, I most likely won't show up. And, usually, my friends understand. Or maybe that's what I think.

Maybe that's why this story made me pause for a second. From my perspective, cancelling plans has always felt harmless because life happens, moods change, and sometimes staying home feels better than forcing yourself to be social. But reading the OP's side of things reminded me that there is often a lot happening behind the scenes that the person cancelling never sees. Someone may have rearranged their schedule, turned down other invitations, bought groceries, prepared food, cleaned their home, or simply spent the week looking forward to spending time together.

Friendships have to be maintained, like any other type of relationship. It requires time, love and affection for the bond to last years, and that's something I have never really thought about. I'm usually pretty impulsive, and if I don't want to get out of my house, I'll most likely prioritize that. But, honestly, I'm sure I'm wrong, and I should probably hang out with my friends if I already agreed to. What's your opinion on the matter?

If cats and dogs hate each other so much, why is it that kittens keep choosing households with dogs to adopt them?

It is a myth as old as time. Cats and dogs hate one another. A myth, yes. Because it is clearly untrue. Cats and dogs are very different animals, and there is no dispute there. But that doesn't mean that they hate each other. Of course, we can say that to people all day long, but they still don't believe it. Cats and dogs are too different. The only way for them to potentially get along is for them to be born and raised together. That's what we are told. And that is not true either. 

After explaining doesn't work, we try to show people. There are so many pictures of cats and dogs being friends that you can find online. Heart-meltingly adorable proof that cats and dogs can be the closest buds. But no, that is not enough. Those are just "internet pictures". There are pictures online of anything and everything, and that is especially true in a world where we can't tell the difference between real and AI anymore. 

But one thing is not fake. Not yet. Stories. Personal stories that people share, on places like r/cats, with endless pictures to accompany them. These stories of kittens popping up out of nowhere and approaching people with dogs on walks - these are the ultimate pieces of proof that cats and dogs don't need to be raised together to become friends. Sometimes, they just choose each other. It's the work of fate. Of the CDS. Cats choose to adopt dogs or to be adopted by dogs so often that, honestly, we think the myth about cats and dogs inherently hating one another should have been thrown out the window a long time ago. 

Building maintenance and repairs, like this pipe replacement, are necessary. Nobody's arguing otherwise. But two weeks of no water, no bedroom, no bathroom access, and construction noise from 8am to 4pm every weekday is a different conversation entirely, and one that a $2,000 a month rent check should not have to absorb quietly

Most tenants dealing with daytime construction can pack a laptop and work from a coffee shop until things calm down. This woman, unfortunately for her, can't do that. Her work requires privacy, a stable home environment, and the exact hours that are currently filled with contractors walking in and out of her bedroom. Telling someone in her situation to just pop over to the library is not a solution. It's a suggestion from someone who did not think about it for more than three seconds.

What would you do if you found your missing cat and then realized that it wasn't yours? 

Having your cat run away is one of the world's worst feelings. We've felt it ourselves. The worst 24 hours of our lives were when we lost our cat. She came back. We were lucky. But those 24 hours were enough for us to learn our lesson for the rest of our lives - make sure that all doors are closed and all windows have nets on them. They don't run away because they are unhappy. Our cats are happy, but they are also curious creatures. Our cats are spoiled as heck. We know it, but they don't. Most of them don't know anything different, and they can't help but be curious about the outside world. 

It takes one second - one moment of turning your back with the door open behind you, and your cat could slip off if they wanted to. And then, whether you find them or not is up to them. We know how well cats can hide. Back when our cat ran away, we were out on the streets, shaking bags of treats and calling her name, and for all we know, she could have been hiding in a bush behind us the whole time, choosing not to be seen. 

Of course, the elation of having her come back was even greater than the pain of losing her. And that is what Shaquille_oatmeal_88 on r/cats must have felt when "their cat" came back to them after four months. They noticed immediately that the kitty was a little different than before, but he wasn't very different. And they were too happy to have her back to pay those tiny differences much attention. Until they couldn't ignore it. They knew that the friendly and loving cat that they thought was theirs actually wasn't. 

Is taking away a privilege the best way to teach respect?

Mom stories are my faveees, and you'll see why. Below you'll find a caring mom who wanted to have a special moment with her teen son, who's been very angry and fussy, like any other teenager. She bought tickets to see her favourite band together, and she was so excited about it. He seemed excited too, although just a few minutes after they arrived at the show, we got mad and wouldn't stop complaining. They ended up leaving early, and she was very sad about it, until….

She remembered her husband had bought tickets for her son to go see his favourite artist. Since the show is close to his birthday, this was going to be the birthday present, and the teen was thrilled. When they got to the car after leaving the show, she said to forget about the upcoming concert, since it was no longer an option for him. Needless to say, he was pretty mad.

I'll start by saying that I'm not a mom, but I am an older sister who helped my mother raise my two siblings. And I'd totally stand with her if she ever had to decide on this one. If I wanted to have a nice time with my son, and he agreed to come with me to see my favourite band, I'd at least expect him to be with me there. Of course, I could understand if he liked other types of music, but in this case, he knew she liked the bad, so he had to put up with it.

I think the mom did wrong in leaving early. Although I imagine that being at the concert of your favourite band with your angry son is not the best scenario, I'd find a way to make it fun for me and stay. The band doesn't play that often, and having to leave before it finished because of your whining teenager… let me say it's just super annoying to read. Orange cats may only have one brain cell, but they use every little bit of it to make us happy. 

Okay, so, confession. We've never actually had an orange cat. Our entire lives, somehow, we have not been picked by the gingers. And so, we didn't know. We didn't understand. Orange cats were just… another kind of cat for us. Cute, purrfect, precious, but no different than any other. It took us diving deep into the world of cats on the internet to find out that orange cats have a kind of… reputation. 

Orange cats have one brain cell. One for all of them. That they share. That is what we have learned about them. It's what the community has told us. And at first, we were baffled. It seems almost offensive to say something like that. Orange cats are smart! Orange cats are no different than any other cat! But alas, we don't actually have a ginger cat, so who are we to argue? We started following orange cats online, following orange cat communities, listening to orange cat owners tell their stories about their ginger felines. And we have come to the conclusion that… they are right. Orange cats are special. So, so special. 

Of course, every once in a while, you will encounter an orange cat that is smart. But that just means that they were in possession of the brain cell on that day. You see… Us saying that orange cats share one brain cell is not intended as an insult, as we first thought. In fact, it is a compliment. Now that we know more about these ginger felines and everything about them that makes them unique, we want one more than we ever had before. Seriously. Please, CDS, we beg you, the next one you send us, let it be a ginger. 

From maid of honour to regular bridesmaid

The question this soon-to-be bride is asking sounds rhetorical, and I'm sure she will find that out sooner or later, and everyone will enjoy an amazing wedding celebration. In the meantime, we can discuss what makes her nervous and try to distinguish which part comes from the whole pre-wedding nervousness and which part comes from the actual issue being talked about.

Sometimes we're so angry about something we feel the need to make it known through an action, and forget all the 20 years of good things and friendship we have with a person. In such challenging times, I would advise always looking at the bigger picture. What would you do? Do you think a big, angry gesture is the key to teaching this friend some boundaries?

Money means power. A generous, wealthy stepmom can be of huge help when the family is struggling financially. But financial support stops feeling generous when it comes with control and surveillance. There's a big difference between helping because you care and helping because you want to have power over other people's choices.

That's what this stepmom appears to know very well. She knows how much power she has over her stepdaughter and her son's dad, and she takes advantage of it. Even after the relationship has fallen apart, she still has control over him because of the money. This dad is not financially independent, which only makes things worse. That kind of dynamic probably feels more like a negotiation with someone who holds all the power instead of a one-to-one conversation. 

The situation can feel manipulative. The dad needs to stop depending on his ex, and the stepmom needs to stop wanting to control everything. The thing is, she's probably used to it, since she's always been the provider, so the only way out is for the dad and the daughter to get a good job and stop using her money. Otherwise, she'll be in control of everything, and nobody else has much of a say because the money is hers. 

The daughter isn't wrong for being upset and for refusing to accept her help. It's actually the only way to break this unhealthy dynamic. And by the way, being grateful doesn't mean politely accepting that someone else can control your time, your choices, or even your relationship with your sibling. Because that's exactly what happened. The stepmom's money even gave her the power to change family vacations and affect the stepdaughter's bond with her younger brother. Given she only sees him once a year, losing that time is not a small thing.

When a gift creates a sense of entitlement

When we pay for something, the transaction is clear: I give you money, you give me what I paid for. With gifts, something more elusive happens: For some people, receiving something as a gift creates a sense of entitlement that masks an underlying dependence on what was given to them. Some people defend themselves from that feeling of dependency by treating what was given to them as something they were owed. For other people, it's the other way round; they can't process that they're receiving something without feeling like they have an enormous debt to the giver. Some excuses don't make sense

I've lived every possible failed romantic story, and I've heard countless ridiculous excuses for bad behaviour, trust me, but blaming a heavy piece of furniture because you said another person's name is one I've never heard of before. I think it's clear that something is off about this situation. The problem is, what can you do about it when YOU JUST FINISHED MOVING IN TOGETHER? How does one proceed?

Sunday: the day for relaxation before the next five days of suffering. 

Sundays have something complicated about them. They're not just a weekend, they're on the cusp of the beginning of the work week. You may find yourself in some sort of weekend bliss, and by each hour passing you're closer and closer to the dread of the work week. The daily commute, the empty chit chat with coworkers, the "per my last email" emails, and the annoying boss who keeps telling you what to do. Sometimes it can be too much and we need a break. The weekend comes and goes, and Sunday is still the weekend. There's something dreamy about Sundays, something that feels restful even if it's almost the work week. Sunday is a perfect day for napping, and in Spanish that means sueños. Sueños means dreams in English, and it's beautiful because it can refer to both the dreams we experience while sleeping and the dreams we have about our lives, the ones we aspire for in our hearts. 

There's something poetic about dreams in general. It's something that bridges the conscious with the unconscious, something that we experience in our sleep but is so uniquely tied to our real life. Everything we experience, think, feel, and know in our waking state could be revisited in a dream. It can appear in ways we didn't even know about, and that's where psychoanalysis comes into play. There's something so interesting about analyzing dreams. It's like you can pull back the curtain for a split second and see everything in your head and heart. How often do you text your boss, and how long does it take them to reply?

It depends on the job, since some employees rely more on their managers than others, but most workers need their manager's input from time to time. Whether it is to make decisions that are not qualified enough to make, or to give helpful advice about a workplace issue, managers are there for a reason, and they should be available to their employees' needs.

Yet, we all know that while on paper this makes perfect sense, it doesn't always happen this way. Some managers tend to go the exact opposite way and make themselves the least available to their employees, forcing them to handle some matters completely on their own. Even though it is completely in their job description, it seems like handling their employees' issues is considered a waste of time, and they would do their best to avoid it. Well, if you ask the employee in the story below, that should work both ways.

The manager featured below decided to enforce one major rule: If she's not at work, don't contact her unless it is an absolute emergency. If you need something from her, reach out to her assistant, but don't bother her while she is off the clock.

While this rule makes sense and is respected by the employees, they still find themselves forced to handle issues that should be the manager's responsibility. While they are not immediate emergencies, it still feels like it should be handled by the manager, yet she won't reply to texts she deems unimportant while she's not at work.

If that is how the manager wants to operate, that's fine, but she should know that this works both ways. This led an employee to refuse to reply to the texts the manager sends while they are off the clock themselves. "Oh, the manager can't find the scissors? Doesn't sound like an emergency to me," is the general approach the employee has taken. And there is nothing the manager can say to stop it, unless she starts leading by example.

Cats are sassy little creatures, and we honestly love them for it even more than we would've otherwise.

Just think of the cute moments of your cat for a second. Really, the cutest you can think of. Your cat on your lap, purring like a tiny tractor. Detectives in the workplace

Back when I was in high school, I was terrified of something like this happening to me, the classical story: the boys make a bet to see who can ask the ugliest girl out, and it turns out I'm the oblivious girl thinking she has a chance with the high school heartthrob. Well, this story doesn't involve that kind of heartbreak, but it does involve someone giving a long, controlled performance to get the information they wanted. I'm struggling to think of what kind of information could be so important, and why there weren't less ridiculous ways to obtain it for the detective-esque colleague.

At any rate, we love to see a performative person turn life into an intrigue movie, and aside from the tiny disillusionment the coworker had to face, we're now gifted with opportunities to turn this situation into a hilarious piece of detective fiction. Does this have the potential to become a 'whodunit' kinda novel?
