What makes the situation even more frustrating is that the employee didn't start at the front desk. They were hired for a completely different role, one that involved client interaction, conferences, and opportunities to travel. Then, after a staffing change, they were asked to cover reception duties "temporarily." Most people would be willing to help out in that situation, especially if they were told a replacement would be hired soon. The problem is that "temporary" has a funny way of becoming permanent when management finds a setup that works for them.

I wouldn't even know how to feel if every time you ask your manager, they avoid the questions as if they were actually hiding something. And the worst part of all is that the OP knows exactly that she's going to be laid off: they're only waiting for the replacement to come. She has been trying to get clarity for months and, instead of receiving a straightforward answer, they've been met with more uncertainty every step of the way. At some point, the lack of communication starts to feel like an answer in itself, even if nobody is willing to say it out loud.

Also, I want to mention that it's worth noting that managers often underestimate how much employees can pick up from tone, body language, and indirect comments. After much deliberation, the filmmaker decided to cast this cat as the newest member of his family. Did they have all the answers? A 27-year-old is being asked to pay thousands in traffic fines for a car her family bought her, a car that was never legally transferred into her name, that her sister eventually took back and kept, and that racked up most of its fines either before she had it or after her sister repossessed it.

Her sister originally sold the car to their mom so she could have her first vehicle, the same way mom had bought the sister her first car. She warned her parents this would blow up. They insisted it was hers. The registration never got transferred, and when her sister asked to borrow it for a week, she simply never returned it.

When rules apply to everyone except the one who's making them

I highly recommend skipping the roommates phase if you can. The fantasy is wonderful, you get to live with a friend your age, and everything is fun and games, until it isn't. With my experience, I've come to realize that when you get to know people through living together, you find the weirdest stuff about them. Everyone has quirks, and it's very hard to find someone whose quirks match yours immediately. The woman who shared this story realized way too late that she was obeying a set of rules that nobody else was, and now she doesn't know how to keep going without initiating chaos. What would you do?

Any cat lover worth their salt knows that a cat's favorite spot is more sacred than Sheldon's spot in the Big Bang Theory. Whomever dares approach said spot had better be armed with treats unless they wish to feel their feline's wrath. They have fought tooth and nail to claim their throne and they will defend it at all costs.

Sadly for the pawrents of said cat children, most of these spots are very inconvenient to the hooman lifestyle. You see, cats enjoy seclusion in their spots, and put it as a priority. Which is relatively reasonable when you are small enough to be scooped up by almost any size of hooman and bundled like a little baby. But this often means that they will find a spot that is hard to reach for us hoomans putting our cat children firmly out of our grasp. And while it is very frustrating to have your cat child disappear on you as a pawrent when you are just trying to help them. There is a fate far worse than this amongst the secret spots that kitties choose to curl up in, and those are the vantage points. Some cats prefer to feel as though they are in a burrow with no light and no sight. But then there are those who feel the need to look over their land like a mighty ruler and in doing so they also add an additional fur supply to the air from their elevated pawsition, spreading little sprinkles of fur all over the house. So because it is more fun to revel in the misery of other cat pawrents as opposed to your own, we made this hilarious collection of cunning cat children who have taken command of their favorite secret spots.

But one fateful day when they were back home, far away from the town their cat child went missing in, they got a call that changed everything. That proves the value of microchipping your cat child. That shows every feline pawrent out there, that no matter how long it has been, no matter how far you might be from your fur baby, there is always a chance that they will find their way back to you.

 

Is being enthusiastic about your job ever a valid reason to get fired?

Let me just say that I'm surprised that no one has fired me for being too eager myself. There's a very fine line between being eager and actually being happy and excited about your job, and it's sad when your good intentions can be perceived as something bad just for showing too many emotions. That being said, I'm sure there has to be another reason as to why the employee was fired.

In my humble opinion, I think the new boss just wanted to have a team of his own, with employees and professionals that he knows and trusts beforehand. And I'm not the only one thinking this: most of the comments agree with my perspective, because there's just no other reason. When you're not doing a good job, there are warnings, meetings where people discuss your mistakes and give you advice for you to improve.  In this story, specifically, the OP went through two probation periods, during which she has not received a bad notice of any kind. So, I think that pretty much says it all.

Something very critical was also the way the termination happened. So abrupt, with little to no room for feedback or a conversation, even. If someone is truly creating safety concerns or failing to meet expectations, those issues are usually documented and discussed long before a termination meeting happens. The fact that the explanation seemed to change from "too eager" to "not enough animal handling experience" only makes the whole situation feel more suspicious.

There's nothing wrong with being fired or laid off. It can happen to the best of us, and it's a part of life. It's one thing to leave a position you dislike, but it's another to have a career opportunity taken away just as you were beginning to settle into it and build a future there. Fortunately, judging by the support from her coworkers and the skills she developed throughout her career, it sounds like she'll land on her feet. Sometimes a disappointing ending is simply the beginning of a much better opportunity somewhere else.

Like a bad penny

This boyfriend showed up where he shouldn't have. God knows not every run-in is a good one, and this one was of the bad kind. Some people advise not to meddle in someone else's affairs, and there might be a point to that, but sadly, not when it comes to your closest friends. I've been in this position before, and I know it's uncomfortable, you wish matters of the relationship would stay between them, and you hope and pray they come up in conversation without being prompted by an external observer. Sadly, sometimes, they never do, and you end up having to do the honourable work of bringing them up and seeing how things unfold. To me, the key question to ask oneself when found in this position is: what would I like a friend of mine to do if he or she saw something like this?

Should you confront a coworker before going to HR?

This question is an eternal debate. From one perspective, you want to value and respect your work, and getting the recognition you deserve is part of that- But, on the other hand, reporting a coworker to HR is a whole other thing. In this story, an employee realized that one of his teammates was putting his own name in a compilation of very important reports, as if he were the one writing them. The OP, who is the OG writer, got so mad that he told HR and got him fired three days later.

I'll be the first to say that I think the OP did well. It's hard to get some good work done, and if she has to demand one of their coworkers, no matter how good their relationship is, I don't believe it's a wrong move. Maybe she wasn't expecting management to fire him; perhaps that's a bit extreme, but when it comes to making yourself worthy, I'm all for that.

Now, I'd love to see how her other piers reacted. This is the lore I want in my office. Such a fun thing to witness, although I'd feel bad for that person leaving. But, I wonder…. is it okay to feel bad about him? Because, at the end of the day, he was getting praised for work he hadn't done. That's stealing in my handbook. Anyways, I think she did well.

Just some corporate advice for y'all today: professional accountability can feel harsh, especially when personal circumstances enter the conversation. But having a family or facing financial consequences doesn't erase workplace misconduct. Responsibility ultimately rests with the person who chose to claim someone else's work, not with the employee who documented it and followed the proper reporting process.

It's enough that we all have to deal with our actual bosses and their (often unreasonable) demands, who wants to deal with a colleague that, for some reason, decided they have anything about what you do at work?

These kinds of coworkers could become real tiring, real fast. They walk around the office thinking they have any kind of authority over other workers, while in reality, they have no leg to stand on. The issue is, you have to deal with them somehow… And that is no easy feat.

As you might guess, when the colleague first started to get pushy and demanding, the employee knew they would have to put her in her spot as soon as possible. She had no reason to make demands or go to the coworker's actual boss and complain about things that had nothing to do with her. When the boss was involved, the employee decided to finally fight back, and they decided it had to be petty.

You see, this colleague is in charge of admin work, like employees submitting their time cards. The employee knew that she liked to submit the time cards with time to spare, so she always asked them to finish it as soon as possible so she would be ahead of her deadline. However, if she is going to be pushy about it, you bet that this employee would do their best to make her job as difficult as possible. While still doing everything by the book, the employee got their sweet revenge and made sure their colleague would never get in their business ever again.

It's purrfect when you have someone in your family who loves your cat enough to take care of them when you're gone. It makes your vacations or work trips so much less stressful knowing that you don't have to invite a stranger into your house to watch your cat while you're gone. The good news is that our cat mom got her cat back, and upon arriving home, her fluffy feline went from anxious to relaxed in a matter of minutes. We can't say the same for her sister's kids and their own relationship. Sometimes, family isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Some countries in Europe are experiencing over 100-degree weather now, with some even saying that they're having the hottest days ever recorded. For those of us who live in the US, we've been lucky to live with air conditioning most of our lives, depending on where you live. But many homes in the UK and Europe don't have air conditioning, and although it can be a pain for us hoomans, it can be very dangerous for our cats. The same things that cool down hoomans don't necessarily work on your kitties, so we compiled a purrfectly helpful list of ways your home could be making the heatwave harder on your cat. 

All of the tricks below are good things to try, but every cat is different, and we all know how finicky cats can be. Not every tip below will work for every cat. Personally, I like to put some ice cubes in a gallon ziplock bag with some water, and put it on the floor. Not only does it cool down the floor, but after a while, my cats get interested in the ice cubes, and start batting them around like little toys. It cools down their paws, and then they lick their paws more from the condensation. Hydrating and fun!
