'I quit and they lose the contract': Overworked software developer given massive projects, agrees to lie to clients

Sun, 03/17/2024 - 08:00

Instead of under-promising and over-delivering, one company found themselves doing the exact opposite.

Truly, this company sounds like a hot mess. Just ask u/SchalkLBI, a software developer who suddenly found themself with a ton of responsibility for low pay. How low was this pay? It was just $1000 per month, and the software developer had to commute for four hours every day to get to work. Commuting two hours each way on an intern salary? That's tough.

This developer writes that they stuck around because they thought that working at this place would pay off in the long run. Sometimes really tough jobs do give you that real-world experience that is worth the strife. But it sounds like this person was set up to fail by their bosses. We write a lot about toxic workplaces, and this is one of the worst situations we've come across in a while. Let's hope this person learned their lessons and can spot red flags from a mile away while looking for their next career opportunity.

Check out the developer's story, as well as their remarks in the comments section. Then, check out these hilarious signs in the wild, like one that sadly laments that the recent loud noises are from "raccoons still in [the] ceiling."

School Admin insists on name-based email address policy, teacher gets unfortunately inappropriate email upsetting parents: 'I went ahead and followed orders'

Sun, 03/17/2024 - 07:00

When I was a wee lad entering into the 6th grade, the middle school I was attending had an unfortunate naming convention for our usernames that consisted of the first five letters of your last name followed by the first three letters of your first name… Naturally, my username was thus "DicksBra." Now, you can imagine how much fun we, a group of 11-year-old boys, had with that. Any time my username was required, it was gleefully announced or entered to the tune of stifled laughter. I'm not sure the responsible adults involved ever realized what the joke was or even would have cared, but surely at some point, a good-humored teacher had a good laugh.

It seems to be a thing that no matter the naming convention for usernames or email addresses your organization adopts, you're going to end with some funny, inappropriate, or downright offensive names. So, as with anything else in life, flexibility is key, but flexibility isn't a trait that school administrators are necessarily known for, which creates problems in certain situations like my own and in the story below.

Interviewee engineers the ultimate jump scare as payback for enduring futile hiring steps: ‘The goal was to get them to turn up the volume as loud as possible’

Sun, 03/17/2024 - 06:00

The hiring process is asinine these days. After 8 rounds of interviews, 4 different cover letters, and losing your will to live, the application to your dream job may still be lost in the trash bin of some flippant hiring manager. On top of that, companies are making it easier than ever to be fired. For those of us between jobs, it certainly requires our full-time attention to land a full-time position.

'I made my coworkers’ favorite snacks disappear': Employee gets back at coworkers after getting constantly criticized and interrupted

Sun, 03/17/2024 - 05:00

When someone at work decides they don't like you for no reason, there usually is not much you can do to change their mind. You can try to reason with them or find common ground, but nine times out of ten, these are unreasonable people with a high school mentality. If they meet you with pettiness, sometimes the only thing you can do in return is to be petty right back.

This thread was posted to Reddit's r/pettyrevenge subreddit by u/MercerAcolyte42, who discovered her coworkers' complete distaste for her personality after their office lunch. Essentially, even during minor interactions like small talk, these two coworkers have a habit of critiquing every little thing the Redditor says. This ranges from work-related discussions to conversations about favorite movies and shows. It doesn't matter what the original poster's opinion is, chances are these two coworkers will find a reason to interrupt her mid-sentence, reject her position on something, or simply ignore everything she's saying.

As we said, when this kind of dynamic forms, there isn't much you can do to change the minds of the people who have decided they despise you for literally no good reason. So how did this Redditor combat this? Well, she figured out what their favorite snacks were and made sure that they slowly but surely started to disappear from the office kitchenette.

‘He wouldn’t let anyone near it': Resident objects to the removal of hazardous tree, hugging it in attempt to prevent machinery from cutting it down

Sun, 03/17/2024 - 04:00

There are a lot of scenarios in movies and TV shows in which a person is opposed to the removal of some kind of landmark, like an old tree or a historical building, and to stop the destruction of it, they do something extreme. Something like tying themselves to said landmark, or organizing a protest with other people in order to stop its removal. Though it might be a funny moment for television, it is intriguing to know whether this types of situation actually happen in real life.

Well, I can give you the answer to that, because the person in this Reddit story tried to do just that. During a windy day, a tree in a neighborhood was dangerously close to falling on top of people's houses. Because of that, it was decided that the tree must be taken down immediately. The next day, when the service that takes down trees arrived, they were stopped by one of the neighbors who started protesting and hugging the tree. I wish I could say it was one of those heroic moments you see on TV, but it seems like this guy was just trying to cause some trouble.

25+ Most Entertaining Memes and Posts for Employees With One Foot Out the Door

Sat, 03/16/2024 - 16:00

Each day that passes you are one step closer to opening that door with a sticky note slapped on it that reads 'Quit'. Maybe one of your coworkers is a Karen, and you can't stand working on one more project with them. Perhaps your job has no benefits, or your salary sucks. It's possible your boss happens to be the king or queen of micromanaging. There are so many different reasons that employees choose to quit… Most of the time, it's not because they lack work ethic, although that's what companies like to tell themselves so that they can sleep better at night.

Do you have one foot out the door? Or are you here for the giggles? Because I have collected hilariously sad memes and posts for employees who are fed up with their jobs and want to quit. 'They need to earn it’: School teacher demands fellow educators discipline students and stop giving them grades they don't deserve, internet reacts

Sat, 03/16/2024 - 15:00

Kids these days… That's a sentence I hear often. 'They're always on their phones, they're not paying attention, they're not putting in the work'. Not all kids. But a lot. And I understand how frustrating it is for teachers and parents to discipline them. There are so many factors involved. One teacher was fed up with the current status and turned to Reddit to complain about what was happening in their school, and most likely in many more. They said that teachers were making things 'too easy' for the students, that they weren't failing them when needed, and that the kids were getting marks they didn't deserve. This teacher went on to give specific examples, and in the end, fellow teachers and the rest of the internet had a lot to say.

Back when I was in school, I got zeroes alright… With a smiley in them. To this day, I don't know if that was to be mean, or nice. After reading this story, check out these hilarious legal loopholes that may help you win a buck, or two.

'Peanut vendor wearing suit made of peanuts': 30 Fashion-forward flops

Sat, 03/16/2024 - 14:00

It's about to get stylish in here. Ready for the latest looks right off the runway? Well, we have none of that. But we do have some truly bonkers fashion pieces that are certainly unique. They transcend the limits of time and normalcy to bring us shoes and shirts that only the quirkiest of us would ever wear.

In the world of highly specific subreddits, one of my favorites to keep an eye on is r/ATBGE. It highlights clothing, jewelry, or artwork that is made with "awful taste, but great execution." (And because it's Reddit, yes, there is also the exact opposite subreddit. It's called "good taste but awful execution," but it's not nearly as laugh-out-loud funny as it's sister subreddit.) It's a helpful way to think about art without being outright dismissive of quirky art: is the piece well-made, but just something no one in their right mind would wear? ATBGE! Art is highly subjective, so some of the fashions below will absolutely thrill the wearer. In fact, I bet some of that stuff is crazy expensive, too.

Feel free to tell us in the comments what outfit combo you'd wear for a night out on the town. Maybe you could wear the jeans helmet (aka the "jelmet") with the fuzzy vegetable sweater/shirt and the clear glass watch, for example. Stun! There are many such possibilities when you open your mind and embrace the utter silliness that these artists and oddballs bring to the world.

Check out these fashionable flops, then read about this customer who broke into an unopened store just because she needed camping equipment really bad, apparently.

HR enforces nonsensical PTO rule, halves employee's vacation time: '[You] owe us 6 days'

Sat, 03/16/2024 - 13:00

Working at a company with a newly established HR department can lead to the establishment of many a shady policy. We're talking about people who don't really understand what it is to be professional and well-managed steering the ship. If you work at a company like this, you certainly cannot expect a smooth sailing experience. Rest assured, there will be bumps along the way.

Here, we have an employee who took five days off at the end of last year at the request of their boss after the loss of their grandmother. Now, a few months later, she received a shady email from her HR representative stating that she owed six days of PTO and would have those days deducted from this year's number of days. She shared her side of the story via this thread on Reddit, which resulted in widespread outrage and frustration at her situation from folks in the comments (especially those who had been through something similar in their own toxic work environments).

'My husband picked up a shift at work on our wedding night': 20+ Unforgettably bad weddings

Sat, 03/16/2024 - 12:00

Maybe you can't recall the best wedding you've ever been to, but the worst one probably comes to mind instantly.

Every couple wants their wedding to be memorable in the right way. They want guests to gush over the decorations, talk about how delicious the food is, and dance late in the night until their feet are sore. It's supposed to be fun… but a lot of weddings end up being so much work that the guests hardly get to enjoy themselves.

A common factor seems to be the brides and grooms who plan the ceremony themselves, versus the couples who rely heavily on their family and friends to plan the event. For example, some couples have one person who is way more interested in the event than the other. That bride will be left pulling all the weight of planning the wedding when her partner claims they "don't care what she does." So the bride will enlist her bridesmaids to start making the decorations or making calls to the venue or caterers.

Others wait until the last minute to enlist their friends and family. Things are bound to fall through the cracks! More than 600 people shared the stories of the worst weddings they've ever been to. Our hearts go out to the people who admitted their own wedding was the worst… Maybe it's time to plan a vow renewal and try again!

Employees conspire against annoying coworker over CEO's attention: 'Four of us plant our computers in those magic four seats [next to the boss]'

Sat, 03/16/2024 - 11:00

Note to self: never be the person everyone rolls their eyes at in the office. We're talking about the person who says whatever the boss would like them to say and would throw someone else under the bus in a second if it meant they got extra points in the boss's book. We're talking about the guy who is always scheduling unnecessary meetings just to make it seem like he's busy. Going out of your way for brownie points may impress an egomaniac, but it's always how to annoy and frustrate your coworkers. The best way to appease both parties in this situation is to just do your job well and read the room.

This thread was posted to Reddit's r/pettyrevenge subreddit by u/DuckDuckWaffle99,  who showed us what happens when you annoy your coworkers so much that they start actively working against your agenda to be the best in the boss's book. What's even more amusing is that some folks in the comments section called the Redditor out for being just like their coworker. Trying to compete with your coworker over your boss's attention essentially means that you too want their attention and are no better than them.

Professional Home Inspectors and Recent Homebuyers Explain How Bad is 'BAD' for Inspection Results

‘He traded his parents for you’: Gen X couple takes drastic action after the entitled runaway teenager renting a room upstairs refuses to wash his dishes

Sat, 03/16/2024 - 09:00

When you decide to live with a roommate or a housemate, you're rolling the dice a little bit. Without knowing for sure how a person acts behind closed doors, it's nearly impossible to vet a prospective housemate for good manners, shared space etiquette, and cleanliness standards.

However, if things like 'cleanliness' and 'mutual independence' are important to you, don't be like the Gen X couple in our next story who got stuck being a runaway 18-year-old's new mommy and daddy.

Due to the desperately high cost of living these days, a couple decided to rent out the room upstairs to a potential roommate. Knowing that they'd be cohabitating with whoever moved in, they graciously offered the use of the kitchen, living room, and all other common areas–big mistake! Once they realized the kid that moved in was a total slob and an entitled loser, all bets were off.

Scroll for the entire story of how this couple took drastic action to uproot the parasitic man-child that moved in upstairs.

Trucker accosted by irate driver who demands to speak to their boss: 'I kind of smirked at him and told him... he wouldn't like what my boss would have to say'

Sat, 03/16/2024 - 08:00

This truck driver couldn't believe what another driver was upset about. At least they had the ultimate loophole for getting out of almost any work-related scenario.

The trucker in this story was driving their 18-wheeler through Texas when they encountered an angry driver. As a trucker, you have the unique privilege of getting to blow that extra-loud horn whenever someone bothers you. A regular car horn is a little loud, but the horn on an 18-wheeler can be heard for miles. It must be so satisfying to startle any bad driver with a blast of sound.

However, this trucker soon realized that the driver was irrationally upset about the horn honking. The driver started screaming and pounding on the door of the truck. Then, he started doing something no truck driver wants: taking photos of the license plate in order to call their boss and complain. That's why so many trucks have those stickers on them that give out a phone number to report bad driving. It's meant to report bad driving, not excessive horn honking!

You can check out the whole story below. Then, read up on these memes that you'll totally get if you grew up in the era of needing to get off the internet so your mom could use the phone

Company suffers massive financial hardship after forcing out irreplaceable worker: 'The [department] racked up eight-figure losses'

Sat, 03/16/2024 - 07:00

Usually, it's wise to have multiple persons capable of maintaining the continuity of the important areas of your organization. This means not having a single employee who knows essential company processes, secrets, codes, and passwords that can't otherwise be found, learned, or replicated by someone else. If you happen to have one of these workers in your organization or someone who is otherwise essential to the operation of your business, you will do well to treat them well. It would certainly be a bad idea to try and push them out of your business over some petty power struggle without first orchestrating a transferral of their responsibilities.

Well, that's basically what happened to this worker who handled the international accounts for this logistics operation. Their relationships and methods were known only to them, so when their petty employer tried to force them out. When no one was able to replicate their methods, the department suffered "eight-figure losses".

‘That is a complete violation of my privacy’: Boss spies on employee on sick leave to make sure he is actually sick and not on vacation

Sat, 03/16/2024 - 06:00

It might be hard to come to terms with the concept, but there should be total and complete trust between a manager and their employees. If a manager is unable to trust that their employees are there to do the best they can, then maybe managing is not the best thing for them. Not to say there aren't any employees who take advantage of a job, but if an employee feels like they are not trusted and are being observed with every step they take, they are definitely not going to stay at that job for long.

Especially when it comes to taking sick days. Of course, there are employees who take sick days even when they are not sick, but that doesn't give employers the excuse to come to their employees' homes and check for themselves, which is pretty much what the boss in this Reddit story did. The boss thought that her employee took sick days just so he could go on vacation with another employee, which led her to think it was a good idea to go to that person's house and spy on them. Is that even legal?

Boss forces assistant to remove headset in the office, she maliciously complies and plays audio at full blast: 'She nagged at me in front of the whole office'

Sat, 03/16/2024 - 05:00

Be careful what you wish for, boss!

It's common for bosses to have strange rules and regulations; nine times out of ten, they are tied to a bizarre superiority/inferiority complex. However, we often find that bosses misinterpret perfectly normal behavior as disrespectful, and that's when this becomes an issue. It's rarely insubordination; in fact, most of the time, employees are so laser-focused on their tasks and responsibilities that they do not have their boss's emotions at the top of their minds.

This boss was annoyed by having to walk three feet over to her assistant's desk to ask her a question. Her assistant had her headset on, listening to an audio transcript of an important meeting for a project. The boss called her name several times to no response and then proceeded to yell at her in front of the whole office. But she didn't stop there. She then immediately enforced a new rule that no one was allowed to wear headsets in the office anymore. Well, the assistant needed to listen to that transcript in order to complete their work, so naturally, some well-deserved malicious compliance ensued.

'You made your bed...': Company sends random dude a client's information via email, dude responds by clicking 'cancel' on important appointment

Sat, 03/16/2024 - 04:00

Social media sites and communication apps are readily accessible. Oftentimes it feels impossible to keep up with them all. You may feel at times that you are unable to keep up with them all. Therefore, you might occasionally need to compartmentalize and determine what is more important and what can wait till later in order to be informed and not miss any important information. But in addition to the countless texts and emails you receive daily, what would happen if you started receiving dozens of emails every day for years that were intended for someone else?

The story that follows is a small-scale revenge story involving a man who got unwanted mail from an international company containing a customer's private information. The Original Poster (OP) initially addressed the situation in a cool, collected, and mature manner. But after numerous attempts to come to an understanding with the company fell through, he ultimately decided to take matters into his own hands. He seized the chance as soon as it presented itself. Having said that, make sure to read the story below if you're interested in finding out how OP shocked the business by getting even in the most creative way imaginable! And remember to read the story of the mother who asks that her daughter reimburse her for the $700,000 that she spent on her expensive upbringing when you're done!

Karen outraged over neighbor's motorcycle, now entire neighborhood has to deal with motorcyclist's petty revenge: '[He] revs his engine for a few minutes, then speeds away in the most obnoxious way possible'

Fri, 03/15/2024 - 16:00

A Karen neighbor got into a feud with her neighbor who owned a motorcycle. According to the Original Poster (OP), who is a fellow neighbor and an observer of this feud, the whole neighborhood is fed up with Karen's behavior. Karen is well-known in the neighborhood for always complaining, as Karen's do, but this time she went too far. She was so upset over her neighbor's motorcycle, who, according to the OP, is pretty respectful with it, that she tried to run him down in the neighborhood.

Now, the motorcyclist is getting his petty revenge. He drives over to Karen's house every day, revs his engine super loud, and then speeds off, just out of spite. Everyone agrees that his actions are justified, as no one likes Karen either. But still, no one wants to hear his loud engine, especially in the middle of the night.

‘Overtime pay for zero work? No problem!’: Employee uses overtime to read a book, leading demanding boss to never request they stay late again

Fri, 03/15/2024 - 15:00

Different jobs have different ways of measuring productivity. You might have a certain quota of assignments you have to do during the day, or maybe get to a certain amount of sales. Or, in some cases, your productivity might be measured simply by how many hours you have been on the job, and not by the quality of your work.

This preference for quantity over quality is something that I personally do not agree with. I think if an employee gets the job done, they shouldn't be further kept at their desk for no apparent reason, which is why I felt for the employee in this Reddit story. This employee shared that their boss has repeatedly asked them to stay late at the job, even when they had nothing to do. One day, when the boss came up to OP (original poster) and again asked them to stay a couple more hours just because, OP decided he would use that time for something worthwhile. So OP pulled out a book and read a novel while waiting they got paid overtime. Safe to say, the boss was quite surprised to see what OP was up to…
