Sprawled on the couch, one arm dangling off the side and the other holding your phone as close to your face as your eyes can still focus, the white light of the screen illuminating an otherwise rapidly darkening room as the last light of the sunset trickles through the open blinds. It's the weekend, or the end of whatever's left of it, the almost 48 hours since you left work have hardly been enough time to even fully decompress so that you can begin to relax and turn your mind to other things. You're still exhausted, and you bury your face and directing mind into doomscrolling, increasingly disinteresting, and equally depleted social media feeds, trying to keep those cortisol-spiking thoughts of the coming week from creeping in.

You can already feel the unbearable conditions of both the heat of the factory where you work and the pressure of a tyrannical manager who rules over the factory work floor with impunity, like some sort of distantly reverberated version of Nurse Ratched presiding over her ward in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.

While this might all sound overly dramatic, for those of us who have been on that borderline of sanity, it's an all-too-real feeling that you don't soon forget. Every week, you start off barely recovered and riding burnout like a surfer trying to get up a wave that has long since broken, and is already rolling up into the swash and back out to sea.

And when it comes to that manager, comparing her to such an authoritarian manager might be a bit far. But, then and again, the archetype of her character exists for a reason; she, and other characters and individuals in our own lives, represent a type of tyrannical over-application of formalism. Resonant with many of the structures of society and the world around us that confine us inside the four walls of our own lives.

The almost comforting familiarity of those same structures is embracive, almost nurturing and mothering, until we seek our own individuality and stray too far from that strict expectation of structural conformity. From that point, we either return to compliance or we find ourselves faced with battling an authority.

"But," you say, dear reader. "I'm confronted by all of this waxing philosophical discussion about how trapped I am in my life. I just wanted to read a fun, editorialized workplace story that was shared online." If that's you, then by all means, don't let me keep you. It's a sad life, but it's the unfortunate reality we live in.

But like we said, we believe in the Cat Distribution System and its all-powerful fateful feline forces, and Noodle's story just confirms it. Noodle, a sweet, sensitive cat was literally thrown out the window of a car while driving through a neighborhood. We don't know anything about his previous family, but we think it's safe to assume that anyone who would throw their cat out of a vehicle is horrible. Stick with us, we're getting to our point, that is this: sometimes, something horrible has to happen in order to get you to where you're truly supposed to be. And Noodle's place was with the purrson he ran up to after being abandoned, who immediately fell in love with his charm. Not to mention his awwdorably fluffy face!

If they hadn't abandoned him, Noodle might still be living with a family who doesn't love him, instead of curled up with his new pawrent who cares for him like their own son. The process may have been painful, but in the end, he found his home furrever.

What is the best way to confront that one coworker who makes their own mistake everyone else's problem?

Instead of running away like usual, she stood her ground and mewed meekly, hoping that her intuition was correct about the cat-loving humans who pspspsed in her direction. Alas, they were as kind as they were eager to help her, purroving that she chose correctly in her human selection. 

These humans deserved every ounce of her affection, and soon, they would be drowning in the clouds and snuggles of 6 new cats, 5 of which were nearly blind, totally helpless, and completely adorable street kittens who needed a furrever home of their own. Alas, when it comes to human/cat relationships, felines can always count on the humans who pspsps their way into the hearts of the feline community, because those cat lovers will always be loyal to the kitty cause. 

Taking out the trash is an ordinary household task. You put your garbage in your own bin, and that's the end of the story. It should be simple and unproblematic, and most people understand it's a basic part of being a respectful neighbor and having basic human decency. Apparently, this woman missed that lesson entirely.

Buttons clicked. Quiz passed. Certification completed. Meanwhile, the employee basically sat back like a proud parent watching artificial intelligence slowly destroy corporate common sense in real time from the comfort of his desk chair.

The best part came during a team meeting when the manager proudly asked employees to share their creative AI success stories. This man really expected productivity examples and workflow improvements. Instead, he got the horrifying realization that one of his employees had fully automated mandatory compliance training. Suddenly, the manager discovered there actually are limits to what he wants AI handling after all. Funny how quickly workplace innovation changes once it becomes embarrassing personally.

It's graduation season, but for this senior, she refused to acknowledge the reality that she won't actually be graduating.

Failing out of school is no laughing matter. However, when an entire faculty and administration make repeated efforts to inform both parents that their daughter does not have enough credits and passing grades to finish high school, it's hard to extend sympathy. 

This is especially the case when the privileged family chooses to remain delusional about the student's potential rather than face the reality that's at stake here. When the 17-year-old showed up at the ceremony unannounced and unprompted, things got a bit tense for everyone involved.

Cats have a special talent for showing up in places where you least expect them. And the funniest part is that they look completely comfortable, as if it were a perfectly well-thought-out decision.

When I was a kid, there was an empty lot at the end of the street that we used as a shortcut to the park. Instead of going around the whole block, we would just cut through that big field of nothing and save ourselves a few solid minutes. 

It was great, honestly.

At least it was, until that empty lot was finally purchased by someone, and the construction of a new house began. At first, the new owners didn't notice that a group of kids was walking through their property, so we were able to get away with it, but it didn't take long for that to change. When the owners and the builders on the lot started noticing that people were using the property as a pathway, they decided to build a fence to keep people from coming through, and for a while, that was enough to stop the trespassers.

But we were kids, and we felt so entitled to something we've had for so long that we decided to rebel, even if we had no right to do so. Every time a fence was put up, we tore it down. No matter what it was that blocked our path, from metal fences to giant boulders, people found a way around it and continued on their way.

Eventually, the new homeowners and a few of the neighbors decided to turn to the city and ask it to find a solution to the problem. Surprisingly, the city actually helped and managed to ensure the homeowners got their privacy without closing off the entire path for the other residents. We still use that path to this day, and everyone's happy.

I hope the residents in the story below can also reach an agreement with their neighbors, as I hate to see their dispute escalating any further…

But what this family have forgotten to take into account is that a prowling male cat can have just as many hooman families as they might have female partners. Which is to say there can be several of them and none of them need be the wiser about one and other.

So what we might actually be looking at is a case of a cat who was fed up with one of his families and decided to take a nice little multi-year vacation from them.
