What makes a neighbor a "good" neighbor?

We used to think that having a good neighbor meant someone who becomes an actual friend of ours, someone who we felt comfortable knocking on their door, hanging out together, having shared dinners, and enjoying life together. We imagined our relationship with our neighbors like an episode of Friends, where the door is always open, and the love you have for each other is that of a family member.

We couldn't have been more wrong.

As you grow older and actually start living next to other people, you realize there is a huge difference between a neighbor and an actual friend. Expecting your neighbors to become your friends is truly a fantasy not many people get to live. Instead, you learn to appreciate what it really means to have a "good" neighbor, who is someone you never see, never hear, and never talk to.

So here is the bitter truth: the less interaction you have with your neighbor, the better. Any resident will agree that neighbors are not easy people to deal with, and they can cause a lot of trouble. They can be noisy, entitled, and even destructive to your property. Usually, the more interactions you have with them, the worse it gets. That is why most people don't wish for "friendly" neighbors; they wish for quiet ones, the kind you don't even notice if they are there or not.

The neighbor below is definitely not a good one, considering she feels entitled enough to "steal" other people's electricity. Since they are all living in trailers with the same landlord, this neighbor thought she could plug her amenities into someone else's outlet box. This resulted in her running countless electric products in her trailer, while her neighbor couldn't even turn on their AC.

When they realized she was responsible for the issue, they immediately took action, which resulted in her having no electricity at all. The only question is, whose fault was it?

In this story, shared with Reddit's r/MaliciousCompliance community, a tech startup refused to promote an employee to a Director's role, a level that she had already been contributing at. She began to put two and two together and realized that the reason she wasn't being promoted was that her boss was concealing her level of contribution and distancing her from her work and success. Their boss basically admitted that he was doing this intentionally so that he could take credit for her achievements. 

She stopped doing the work, making it clear she was going to work to the job description of her current role. The effect was evident almost immediately when her pulling back to her defined role saw sales targets and other KPIs missed as sales tanked.

She took the extra time and energy to work on herself and her own certifications, preparing her for her future. So, when she was eventually laid off from the now-struggling company, she was well prepared to make the next step, landing a job that was a perfect next step in her career and a solid bump up in pay.

Helping a friend buy groceries is a meaningful way to support a struggling family, especially when two children are involved. But a friend's generosity has its limits. And a shopping list including ribeyes and prime rib is one of them. 

A 26-year-old woman in today's story has helped her friend with groceries for three months, until she began noticing that her friend was making choices she would never make with her own money. It felt like taking a friend to dinner and watching them order the most expensive dish on the menu. She felt she was being taken advantage of, so she decided to cut her off respectfully. Or at least that's what she tried. 

The friend is a working mom who supports two children and an unemployed boyfriend, so the woman offered her financial help with groceries, hoping to relieve some pressure and help them catch up. The woman began spending between $150 and $350 on their groceries each month. Forgotten items added another $50 to $100 too. However, it was all going well until the latest Walmart order, which cost $250. While reviewing the shopping list, the woman noticed convenience foods, frozen meals, chips, and snacks that were unlikely to last very long. Those choices caused some concern, but the expensive meat was the real breaking point. 

She had offered financial help, not an opportunity to upgrade the family's shopping habits while an unemployed boyfriend benefited from her generosity. And more importantly, her covering the groceries wouldn't solve the household's larger financial problems. It's reasonable that she felt uncomfortable when her money wasn't used as she expected, so she decided to end the arrangement. 

Summer has a new fashion icon, and it has whiskers.

Put a pair of sunglasses on a cat, and suddenly it looks like it owns the beach, the pool, and probably the house too. It's almost unfair how effortlessly felines pull off a look that most of us could never dream of wearing. Just because you aren't in debt doesn't mean that money is just growing in your pocket.

Student loans are such a complex matter because they are incredibly useful to pay for college without having to work many hours at a time, but they are still debt and have all the negative parts of it. Being able to pay for university because your parents saved in a college fund is extremely privileged. Not many have that kind of luck, and if they do, it doesn't necessarily mean that the school tuition for the whole time you spend studying in it is going to be covered. Thousands of young adults rely on student loans to pay for education, and some even have financial aid or a part-time job.

After you finish your education, it can take you several years to fully eliminate the student debt you took when you were 18. Like the case of this student in the story below. He is 27 years old, and he just finished paying off his. That is such a long time, and it makes the whole process stressful, as you start believing you will never get rid of that debt. So, knowing how hard it was for him, his parents asked him if he wanted to help them out with paying off his brother's tuition.

Now, it was really hard for this user to get rid of the debt. He has been living a cheap lifestyle for years and working since he was studying. He just got free. Now he has other plans for his money. At least he wants to save it. Now, with his parents offering, he feels in an awkward position. He loves his brother, but getting into a commitment this big when he just got free from another one seems not only a risk but also uncomfortable. He wants to save for his future, not be spending more money on somebody else's education. Would you do that kind of thing for a sibling? Or would you focus on building better financials for yourself and your future? 
 

The Cat Distribution System has never been very interested in waiting for the "right time."

This family thought they had everything planned out. They were moving next month, wanted to help their current cat settle into a new home before introducing a companion, and figured they'd start filling out adoption applications after the move. It made perfect sense. Then a tiny kitten came running down the highway and completely changed the plan.

The rescue wasn't exactly easy. The frightened little kitten darted through traffic while her future family chased after her in flip-flops, hoping they could reach her before another car did. By the time they finally scooped her up, she was scratched, filthy, and completely exhausted. Less than 20 minutes later, she was already at the vet getting the care she needed.

The veterinarian asked the question every rescuer dreams of hearing.

"Do you plan on keeping her?"

Looking at Styx now, it's hard to believe she's the same kitten. The scared highway runner has been replaced by a happy kitten with a round little belly, a loud purr, and a family that's completely wrapped around her tiny paw. She'll even have another cat waiting to help her settle into the new house.

Plans have a funny way of changing when a cat gets involved. People spend weeks scrolling through adoption listings, debating names, and deciding when the timing feels right. Then a kitten shows up out of nowhere and makes the decision for them. Suddenly, the moving checklist gets a little longer, another food bowl appears on the shopping list, and someone starts picking out toys instead of filling out adoption paperwork.

Styx may not have arrived the way anyone expected, but it's hard to imagine a better welcome-home gift for a family about to start a brand-new chapter together.

Cats always have an opinion, and they make sure you hear them out. 

Cats are our babies. Just because they don't have our DNA doesn't mean that they are not. In practice, that is exactly what they are. They are their own little independent creatures with their own independent desires, and yet, we are the ones making the final calls. When my cat needed to be put on a diet, she was put on a diet, no matter how much she protested. When my cat spooks me into taking her to the vet, she can yell all she wants, but we're going. When my cat screams at the closed door of my bathroom when I'm showering… fine, I let her in. We, as pawrents, have to choose our battles. 

They may be tiny, but our cats always have big opinions. Whether we agree with their opinions or not, one thing is for sure, and that is that our cats will let us know what they are. Loud and clear. And although most times, our cats really don't have the final say, sometimes, like the kitty in today's story, they do what they want anyway. 

When this owner rehomed their cat, they did it with the best intentions. They were having trouble financially, and they thought that their cat would do better in a more stable home. They found the best replacement home they could, then they moved, and weeks of heartbreak and staring at cat pictures passed before they heard a meow in front of their new home. Mind you, the cat didn't know this new home, didn't know the way. Half an hour from his old home, and he found his previous owners anyway. And you know what? He knew better. He preferred to be with them, even if it meant slightly less fancy cat trees. 

What is it with people so full of themselves who do what they want without caring how it affects others?

The issue with self-centered people is that they won't admit when they are wrong. That's what happened with this aunt and her 8-year-old nephew. The boy's mom shared on r/AITH that her boy was organizing his own party, since he has a taste for organization. His aunt is usually referred to as "the fun aunt." She stepped in and said she would make things more interesting and that all children like surprises. The mother wasn't sure, but she let it go. The day of the party, the aunt disappeared for 20 minutes and came back with a guy disguised as a dinosaur. The birthday boy was afraid of that kind of costume, so he ran off and locked himself in his mom's room. The aunt never apologized, and her sister is not happy with calling her "the fun aunt" anymore. 

Some adults who don't have children sometimes have issues empathizing with them. They think they know best because they are adults, and children still don't know what they like or want. This kind of thought is the one that usually leads children to keep a distance from their family later in life. It sends the message that they don't really care about their opinions, wishes, or needs, and they should just agree with everything because they are kids. 

What they don't realize is that, even though they are young, many kids have a strong personality and already have an established sense of what they like and what they don't. While it is not possible or healthy for them if adults give them everything they want, some exceptions can be made under special circumstances, like the kids' birthday. If a kid is excited over planning their birthday the way they want, and what they ask for is doable for the family, there's no reason to suddenly change the plans and do something that, from the adults' perspective, is better. The child will be stuck with a party they don't like. If the aunt had been a little less self-centered and acknowledged her nephews' plan, her sister wouldn't be mad at her, and she would still be called "the fun aunt."

Our cats know when we need them the most. 

One thing that people who don't have cats truly don't understand is that our cats know when we truly need them. They're no different than dogs in that way. They know us so well, our cats can sense when we are sad, when we're in pain, or when we're going through all kinds of changes. My cat, for the first 10 years of her life, was not a very cuddly one. She would sometimes cuddle with me at night or in the winter when she was cold, but without fail, whenever I cried, she was by my side. Because she knew, and she knows, and although sometimes she chooses to ignore my crying (which is a funny part of cat ownership too), she does know when I actually need her. That's true for all of them. Cats know when we need them the most. 

If you haven't heard of medical alert cats before, it's because there are fewer of them, as opposed to medical alert dogs. It's possible to train cats, but it is much harder. Cats are very individual. They are not bred for the purpose of helping humans. It's rare to have a trained medical alert cat, even though it is possible, which probably explains why, when we asked you guys - our audience - to tell us stories about your medical alert cats, a good chunk of the stories that we got were of untrained cats who simply learned to recognize when their humans needed help. And they save lives this way. They know when we need them, they are worried about us, and they alert us that something is wrong - without ever needing to be taught to alert. To us, that is something uniquely amazing about cats. 

After paying for their own children's college, do grandparents owe the same financial support to the next generation?

One couple thought they had finally reached the stage of life where they could enjoy the rewards of decades of hard work. But after announcing a long-awaited trip to Europe, their daughter argued that the money should go toward her child's future instead. The disagreement escalated into an ultimatum involving access to their grandchild.

What an awful attitude the daughter had. There's a point in life when people need to understand they don't have to receive things from their parents anymore. We all end up being grown adults who have to find a way of living on our own, and forget that our parents once helped us. In this case, this daughter needs to understand this point and move on with her life.

Her parents were super nice and gave every kid a fund for college, which is more than other parents can afford, and they all used it for that and other things. But once this is used and the kids started getting married and having a life, they cannot pretend the grandparents are going to be there to fund their own kids' colleges and other stuff, and should not get mad about this. 

I also don't like when the daughter threatens the parents with not letting them see the baby, which is so bad and wrong in so many ways. I hope that the parents are strong and don't give her money for her kids' college fund because they are scared of not seeing the kid. This is not going to happen anyway. I don't think the girl is immature enough to prevent their own parents from being with the kid; it doesn't make sense.

When the AC is freezing, cat memes are here to warm your soul. 

I don't know about you, but I… am a winter person. Oh, winter, the best time of the year. Rain outside knocking on the windows gently, my cat wrapped up in blankets all day long, hot cocoa and hot coffee always the purrfect complement to anything that there is to eat. Oh, I could fantasize about winter every day. Especially right now. I admit, there was a moment this winter when I said, out loud: "I miss summer," but I take it back. The universe can have summer back. This summer has been too long, too hot, and everyone has been way overcompensating with the ACs. It's hot outside, and freezing inside, and just like during winter, there is one thing that keeps me warm no matter what - cat memes. 

Even when the AC is at full force, blasting cold into the room, freezing everything in its path…  even when you tell your co-workers that you're about to lose fingers to frostbite, and they tell you to bring another jacket because one of them is cold… even then, heartwarming cat memes are here to keep my soul warm. And okay, it's friggin' cold inside, thanks, we know. But at the very least, these adorable cats are here to distract us from the cold and help us focus on our work just enough to make the workday pass a little bit faster. Hey, you do the best with what you have, and it really does help. Cats are always the best distraction from the real world. And the rest of the time that you have on your hands, well, you can spend that doing what I do -fantasizing about winter coming back and bringing balance back into the universe. 

Landlords who treat tenants like temporary guests who should be grateful for the privilege of living in their moldy shoebox are truly fascinating. And this one just became even more fascinating when the tenant buys a house, and the whole power dynamic flipped like a pancake.

So, A renter pays 850 for a 500-square-foot apartment in a major city. Four years of stacking cash while tolerating slumlord conditions. The goal was always to leave for good. A baby arrives. A three-bedroom townhome gets purchased in a quiet part of town. The lease ends September 30. The property manager loses his mind.

Would you take a trip across the world to visit an exceptionally friendly orange cat? We would.

I've never been to Australia, and I have very little desire to go there. Why? Because of the spiders. And the snakes. And because of every other crazy animal that wants to eat me for breakfast. But, there was one thing that could have convinced me to fly across many oceans to visit, and that was this friendly orange cat in Sydney. Someone added him as a "tourist attraction" to Google Maps, and he amassed a 4.9-star rating. One purrson rated him less than 5 stars, and whoever you are, you better watch out. We're telling Santa to put you on the naughty list.

He became a very popular spot and was loved by all the locals as well as the tourists who stopped by to give him some head scritches. But then… disaster happened. Overnight, he was removed from Google Maps, and his nearly purrfect rating was gone. Needless to say, the cat community was outraged. They threw their paws up in the air because they did care and demanded his return. 

Our pleas were not heard, but all hope is not lost. There is strength in numbers, so if you all join our cause, we can hopefully get him reestablished as the local icon that he is. If anyone deserves it, he does, and with our power combined, he might just become Sydney's highest-rated attraction. The time is now! 

If you offer to do something nice for someone, do it as they like. They never asked you to do it in the first place.

Why would someone offer to do something nice for someone else's birthday, only to do what they like instead of what the birthday person asked for? If you offer, you need to comply with the demand. Some people see the offering to do something as a way to do what they like. As if it were an opportunity to benefit themselves rather than the person they are making the offering for. That's exactly what happened in the story below.

If a friend told you they were going to help you paint your house, you accepted and told them it needed to be purple, but when you came home is green. How would you react? Would you be happy they did you the favor of painting your house? Or would you be mad they painted the color THEY liked instead of the one you asked for? Would you regret accepting their offering? Well, you probably would, especially if green was the color you hated the most. That is just another way of putting the situation of this story. The sister wanted a lemon birthday cake she was going to get for herself. Her sister offered to do it for her as some kind of gift. She agreed, but it had to be the lemon cake she liked. All that just to get a cake the birthday girl couldn't eat because it had the only ingredient she had told her sister not to add into the mix.

We can obviously anticipate how the birthday girl felt. Her sister had asked her multiple times if she could add the extra ingredient, and every single time she said no. Then why do it? Easy, she thought she knew best. Instead of doing what her sister wanted and actually liked, she did what she trusted was going to be the best. She couldn't admit that she was wrong by doing that, ruining the birthday cake for the one person it was important for. 
 

What request can a boss ask of an employee that is simply too much to ask for?

Plenty of times in the workplace, we find ourselves doing a task that makes us think, "I'm definitely not supposed to do that". These types of tasks usually start with a request from the boss, and even though we know the boss is asking something that is way beyond our job description. At first, we might consider gathering up the courage and telling our boss, "No, I'm not doing that," but many employees might not actually say those words out loud. Instead, we bottle up our feelings, swallow our pride, and get to work. Our need to keep our jobs outweighs the need to stand up to our boss when they make demands like these, so we fulfil them as fast as possible and get on with our day.

There are some tasks, however, that you might not agree to as easily. Demands that cross a line that even a steady income cannot make up for, something like what the boss below tried to ask of the System Admin employee.

This boss on r/pettyrevenge knew that the employee had experience with Photoshop, so he asked them to alter invoices after they were generated so that the company could charge clients for work that wasn't actually done. Basically, the boss asked the employee to take part in the company committing fraud. This was a request the employee could not comply with, no matter what. So, the employee informed upper management about the boss's request, and when they did nothing to stop him, the employee decided this was not a job they wanted to keep and turned in their two weeks' notice. 

A request like this might make you appreciate the tasks your own boss gives you, you know, things that don't make you question your workplace's integrity. At least the employee didn't let their boss drag them down with him. The employee even decided to teach the boss a lesson before they finally left the company…

Are you obligated to subsidize your parents' lifestyle?

Every culture has different expectations around helping out your parents as you get older. In some cultures, there's no inherent obligation to help the people who raised you. In others, it's unthinkable to do anything less than your best to help out your parents. We all grow up with different families and different expectations within those, and it can be hard to square those with our own individual realities sometimes. And our own visions about what our own family should look like can change over time. You might grow up thinking a certain way, and then once you branch out on your own, you start to redefine your relationships to the people you're related to. Maybe once you're out there on your own, you realize how precious your independence is to you, and how you would do anything to keep it that way. But maybe your parents have a different idea. The sun and the story were facing that dilemma when his mom was going through a tough financial situation. She was accustomed to a certain kind of lifestyle which her current reality prohibited her from living. She wanted to keep things a certain way, and expected her son to help her out with that. 

It's never easy to see your cat grow old, but it's different when you never see them young and youthful either. 

It takes a certain type of person to want to adopt a senior pet. There's mostly wear and tear, and you don't have their best years. But for some, they'd rather have those years then nothing at all. In this story, this guy met Momo back in January 2012. He was being fed daily as a stray cat at an apartment complex in Metro Detroit by a nice stranger. It was a harsh winter, with snow and winds, and the person feeding Momo wanted to give him a proper home. He started posting on Facebook groups urgently seeking a home for him because he was moving to Georgia in a week. So this guy sees the posts and offers to take him and get him fixed, and at least foster him until he has a real home. It turns out that Momo was already fixed, and had spent most of his life living outside. He was able to catch Momo and take him in as his own. He originally thought Momo had a cat dad, but it wasn't true. 

He did the right thing and took Momo home in a large crate in the basement to keep him away from the other cats. He would go there and pet him, and it ended up being Momo's furrever home. Since Momo was already a senior cat, he really thought he was doing to lose him one summer when he started showing signs that he was quickly aging. But then suddenly, he pulled through and was the same Momo as he was before. In the last three months though, Momo has slowed down quite a bit and his owner is now reliving their time together. He knows that he made a risk when he took in a senior cat, but he also is so grateful for the time they've gotten together. It's not every day you meet a sweet cat who you can call your own. This story is one of bravery and wholesomeness, enjoy it like the owner enjoyed Momo. 

If someone makes you aware that something bad is going to happen, you either correct it or follow your gut, but then accept your fate when it in fact happens.

If someone came and told you to your face that the wildlife you are befriending is damaging your house, and you decided not to care, then it's 100% YOUR FAULT that you didn't hear when you were told. Especially if this person not only told you once or twice, but a thousand times. They aren't responsible for the damage that you let happen, knowing the problems that it would cause in the long run. You are the one responsible for the damage that the creatures that you let into your house create. You are the human who opened the door to them. That is the topic of the story below.

Responsibility seems to be the main issue here. Who has to take care of the damage? The answer is actually quite easy to determine. The people who decided to let the animal in. The ones who also ignored the warning of what was going to happen. They need to pay. Nobody else. No matter how much lawyers get involved or how many trials they can get to, it will always be their fault, and so, their responsibility to fix. The daughter is just someone who did their best to warn them, and all for what? Just to get involved in a mess that they expect her money to fix.

Maybe someone sees this differently, or there is another side to this story. But to my understanding, there is nothing that proves that she should be the one wasting money. They were the ones making the decision to let wildlife into the house. I don't really get why they think it is better to take the matter to court instead of accepting that they were wrong and that they should have listened to their daughter. Ruin the family over something like this seems not only incredibly dumb, but also sad. Admit it, you were wrong. Let's end the matter for once and for all.
