Can you support your friends without becoming their default babysitter?

It takes a village to raise a child… or at least that's what people say. And honestly, I agree with it. Life is hard, parenting is hard, and having people around who are willing to help can make a huge difference. Most of us have no problem showing up for the people we love when they need a hand. The problem is that sometimes the line between helping and being expected to help starts getting a little blurry.

That's why this story stood out to me. The OP wasn't refusing to babysit because she hates kids or because she didn't want to support her best friend. Actually, it was the opposite. She had already agreed to watch the kids because her friend wanted to get her nails done and have a few hours to herself. Honestly, that sounds like a pretty good reason to call in the village. Every parent deserves a break now and then.

But then she found out something that completely changed the situation. The kids' father wasn't working anymore. His plans had been cancelled, and instead of staying home with his children, he wanted to go watch a World Cup game at a bar. That's when the OP decided she wasn't interested in driving across town just so someone else's parenting responsibilities could become her problem for the evening.

And if I'm being fair, I can understand why she felt that way. Helping out an overwhelmed friend is one thing. Becoming the default backup parent whenever Dad would rather be somewhere else is another. The fact that there had already been issues with last-minute changes and babysitting sessions stretching longer than expected didn't exactly help either.

Of course, setting boundaries is a lot easier in theory than it is in practice, especially when the person involved is your best friend. Nobody wants to be the bad guy. Nobody wants to hurt someone's feelings. But sometimes saying no doesn't mean you're abandoning your village: it just means you're reminding people that villages work best when everyone contributes.

Moral of the story: always microchip your cats!

Cats are finicky creatures. You can give them a purrfect plethora of warm, cushy beds, the highest quality food and treats, all the attention they could ever want (and more), and they still might try to bolt every time you open the front door. Their curiosity gets the better of them sometimes, and even though we know better, they don't. Our spoiled little cat children are not built for survival, for example, they can't even "hunt" their toy mice. We're pretty sure they have no hunting instincts at all, unless you count incessant meowing until we open a can of tuna for them as "hunting". 

This is why it's impurrtant to microchip your cats, because in the case that they do pull off a Houdini-level escape from the living room, all someone has to do is find them and take them to a vet, and they should be returned to you. That's also assuming that whoever found them will do the right thing, but that's a whole other topic that we're not getting into today.

Luckily, there are still good people in the world, and one of them can be found in Reddit's r/notmycat subreddit. They rescued an expensive designer breed kitten (Scottish fold) that they found in their yard. Instead of keeping the kitten for themselves, they took him to the vet, checked for a microchip, and safely returned him to his owner. After seeing these pictures, we officially petition to rename the Siamese cat breed to Sillymese.

If you thought of Siamese cats as majestic, princely, exotically beautiful, or even as photogenic cats - we think you've got it all wrong. Well, not all, Siamese cats are truly beautiful, that's for sure. But they have such a well-hidden derpy side that people who have never had a Siamese resident cat will never understand. We've also never raised a Siamese cat child, but luckily for us, the people over at the r/Siamesecats community agreed to expose the truth that Siamese cats' DNA is actually made of  50% silly, 40% disassembled body parts, 10% rolled-over poses, and 200% derp.

It's always surprising to learn that something you thought of as so majestic and pristine is actually the epitome of whackadoodlery. It's a "never meet you heroes" sort of situation, but with the one big difference of cats - we'd always want to meet cats. It doesn't matter how silly cats are, how derpy they look, and how whacky they behave like - we would always want to meet cats. Even in their online form of a silly series of pictures full of cat derp.

It seems that missing the flight wasn't an innocent mistake.

Some errors, like forgetting a name, missing an appointment, or saying the wrong word, may be read as expressions of a wish or a conflict that has not yet surfaced through words. Seeing it through that lens, the fact that the girlfriend from this story missed the flight might not be  'just carelessness'; instead, it can signify a much deeper truth. Well, to be honest, that truth doesn't seem to be that much deeper. Apparently, if you scratch the surface just a little, it emerges.

There is nothing worse than seeing an ugly truth, but well, I might be jumping to conclusions too fast; let's at least try to give the girl a chance first.

Our guy didn't need any of that. Cats are the combination of a lot of things, but most impawrtantly - they make wholesomeness and sass live side by side so effortlessly, like no other creature can.

We don't know how cats do it, but it's a very cat thing to be two things at once, even if they seem contradictory. For example, just yesterday our cat was biting and licking our hand at the same time. Yeah, we also didn't know it was physically possible until that moment. And there are also the street cats next to where we live that we give treats to every once in a while, and this one sweet stray both licks the churu and growls at the same time. Seriously, if that's not very cat of him, we don't know what is.

Cats are wholesome for sure - they sit on you and purr, they ask for pets by gently bonking their heads on your leg, and "meow" is one of the softest sounds any creature can produce. Cats have a very special and sweet way to show that they love someone, and if you have a cat of your own, you know exactly what we're talking about. Cats are very wholesome because they're so loving, in their own way. But yet, it never contradicts their inherent sassy nature.

You see, cats can be cute, but they're also the kings and queens of sass. Cats are so sassy that they either make us laugh so much with how hilarious they are, or they truly hit the goblin mode. Take the 4 AM zoomies, for example - it's a cat art on its own, but every cat parent experienced it in full force. We even had to endure it last night - the clock showed 3:52 AM, and our cat decided, in their sassy and daring character, that it's time to cosplay a Formula 1 car all around the house. Including the sounds.

But how do they make it work? Well, cats are mysterious. We might not know all their secrets until the very end. But what we do know is that somehow, both the cuteness and the silliness exist in them like yin and yang. It's that duality that makes cats… well, cats.

Don't you have that friend you look at and think, "Hey, we're literally the same person"? That bro who guesses that thing that was on your mind even before you say it out loud? That's your twin. Not your biological twin, but your brain cells are somehow connected. Please take good care of your twin. You won't find another one like them. Tell your bestie you love them with cat memes!

Some cats are lucky enough to travel around the world more than most of us do.

With purrfectly prepared equipment, our feline friends are discovering the world and serving outfits at the same time! Tiny snow googles, chic berets and warm beanies, kitties know how to adapt to every place their hoomans take them to. 

I have to admit, I have never been more jealous of a smol, furry,  fluffy ball. Imagine going to the most insane places, looking fabulous and not paying for a dime. In my next life, I am reincarnating in the form of a spoiled and cute travelling cat. No carrying heavy bags, no being worried about having your passport with you at all times, no hurting feet. I cannot think of a better life. Cats not also have nine lives, but they also have one of the luckiest one life could have given them. 

Another perk of traveling with a kitty is how unbothered they are. There will be no barking, no throwing tantrums, no diapers on your bag. Cats have to be one of the most easy going companions one can find. They can hold their pee for hours, sleep literally anywhere you put them in, change sizes, from big to small. Their moldable bodies makes them the ideal travel buddy. No space for a travelling bag pack? No worries! They will somehow manage to fit in your purse like a labubu charm.

"The Curious Case of the Farmer Dad"

As we get older, our roles in relation to our parents often become reversed. In short, we become the parents, and they become the children. This doesn't always happen, but when it does, it becomes a source of profound distress. In the case of the daughter who shared her experience with this, I think it's more of a 'the dad never grew up to begin with' situation, but we'll see.

Lately, I've come to terms with the fact that I've idealized adulthood my whole life, and I used to think older people knew things I didn't or had some common special wiring that came with age. Turns out, they don't. Your level of maturity has little to no relation to your age whatsoever, and some people remain blissfully teenagers for all the course of their lives.

Seventy-two hours after saying goodbye to their beloved senior cat, an unexpected kitten changed everything.

Anyone who spends time in Reddit's r/CatDistributionSystem subreddit knows the community is full of stories about cats showing up at exactly the right moment. Whether you believe in fate or coincidence, some feline arrivals are just a little harder to explain away than others.

Last month, this family said goodbye to Darkness, a beloved toothless senior tomcat who had become their soul cat in less than two years together. After a short battle with cancer, they were left adjusting to life without the gentle old feline who had made such a big impact on their lives.

A few days later, a friend tried to offer some comfort by saying that Darkness would come back when the time was right. The grieving pawrent laughed and said that if he did, hopefully he'd come back younger and with more teeth. Later that evening, she shared the conversation with her husband, and the two agreed that they were going to take a break from cat parenting for a while.

As it turns out, that break wasn't meant to last.

The very next morning, her husband arrived at work and found a young black kitten waiting for him. Less than three days after saying goodbye to Darkness and deciding not to get another cat anytime soon, Dolly had entered the picture and completely changed the plan.

Some cats' life circumstances just make their happy ever after even happier than usual.

There's a very big contrast between the start of Koda's life and the life he leads now, as u/StillSea9674 tells on r/nowmycat. It's like looking at a black-and-white page, with a very clear distinction between the two sides. Seeing a now-pampered cat in the beautiful pictures they added won't tell you anything about how he lived poorly for the first seven years of his life. If anything, we're grateful for the Cat Distribution System for fitting this beautiful boy with the right human parents, who now give him the best life he can live.

It's not that we didn't know that some people treat cats horridly, but hearing of a first-hand account with such horrendous details makes our stomachs ache. We can't fathom hurting animals (or people, for that matter) in this way. We can't understand how someone gets to a situation where they knowingly put animals in harm's way on such a scale. But unlike many on this property with hoarded animals, Koda was one of the only survivors. He was not well, though - this life led him to have many health issues that needed treating. And that's where we're so grateful for the CDS to pair him with the people willing to nurse him back to health, and loveingly so.

Reading through Koda's story is an emotional rollercoaster - but because after a very low low there's a very high high. The happy end is a sharp contrast to all that he had to go through. And as cat lovers who read many cat adoption stories every day, this one made us the happiest recently. It's that difference between the beginning and the end that makes the sadness-to-happiness spectrum very wide, and why it would make every cat lover reading this happy - at least when they get to the end.

Everyone hates their HOA, so why do they still exist?

Well, the answer lies in their power over us. Rendering residents powerless helps larger groups take over a property, and like a meticulous contagion that infects every level of this metaphorical food chain, the HOA is the apex predator poised to consume everything. 

Yet this one woman stood up to them anyway.

After months of watching their community get the short end of a "budgeting" cut, plants were all dried up, trees were pruned into submission, and shrubs were reduced to sticks and berries. Cats are very sensitive animals. They have a very good ear, and can hear sounds from the other corner of the house. The hunting instinct lives within them, and though some are scared of them, they barely hunt. Well that might just be my indoor cat, of course I can't speak for all the cat community. But these are good guys we all know it.

What you may not know though, is that with a good listening ear, comes a purrfectly curated sense of music. As humans do, some cats also are born with a gifted ear, a ear beyond average. Making them able to appreciate the dreamiest instrument sounds humans can make. See I love my cat, but sadly she did not inherited her mothers (me) awesome, perfect, music taste, LOL. no I am kidding. Kind of. As a person who plays a few instruments, my dear cat child has not once attempted to join me. And you know what, yes that's fine, I am an openminded parent who will support whatever decision my child makes, even if it's leaving behind her possible music career. 

But these guys? These kitties have found their passion and have been purrsuing it with dedication and determination. It takes a lot of courage to give to yourself to the music industry. But our feline friends are not scared and drams are being achieved. Their soft and fluffy paws can reach a level of sonata not even Beethoven was able to achieve. No disrespect to him, of course! But there are some things only those with a really refined ear and some quishy paws can create.   

From scapegoat to saviour.

Sometimes parents perceive one child as more competent, intelligent, or strong; as a result, the other children under the same roof are favoured and protected, while the other is expected to endure and handle everything as an adult would. In the story below, I think the brother who tells it was put in this position because he's the oldest and witnessed the family's hardest times.

As children, we see the adults around us (especially our parents) as almighty figures, and as we grow up, hopefully we begin to understand they were never so powerful or intelligent; they were just normal people confused and making mistakes just like us. After all, it's our first time alive (that we know of). I'm purposely trying to convey a weak moral stance for now, given we're only introducing the story, but I actually think the parents in this story have way darker motives lol.

A kitten's meow would save me right now…

Do cats have magical powers? Or are humans just feeble-brained and cuteness-driven? 

Purrhaps I'm alone in this, but there's one tiny, almost imperceptible noise that will instantly activate the TLC receptors in my brain: a kitten's meow. Unlike their adult counterparts, who use meowing to get extra gravy in their kibbles, to wake the humans at 2 AM for a game of feather, and to notify the humans that their litter box is full, kitten meows are more delicate and instinctive. Kittens don't realize the power they wield with the mew, that's why it's so much more magical and adorable. 

Kittens mew when they need help, food, or water, hoping that some giant, bipedal creature will come rescue them with a bottle of warm milk, a basket of toys, and a warm heat pad to sleep on. Kittens are feeble and sort of useless, creating more problems and messes than their weight can handle, and yet kittens are the purest form of human kindness that exists on earth. They need us. They meow for us. And we, cat lovers, will always come running (no, sprinting) to their aid. 

Getting fired at 58 after 20 years at the same company should feel like a crisis. For this guy, it mostly feels like a long-overdue exit

And fter 35 years of sitting through meetings that could have been emails, writing performance reviews for goals nobody actually believed in, and pretending that quarterly metrics represented something meaningful about human existence, the universe finally did this man the courtesy of firing him, and somewhere in the severance paperwork, tucked between the COBRA forms and the non-disparagement clause, was the retirement he had been too busy to ask for.

It's the last day of the week, finally leaving work and returning home to a blissful weekend, full of fur, purr, and paws. We're talking about spending the best quality time with all of our cats, of course. It's time to experience the best time of the week with your cat, but just before that - a quick stop at the internet's most blessed corner. Which is right here. It's that sweet time between you finishing your workweek and you getting home to some cat cuddles that you need to fill the anticipation for a whole cat weekend starting. Is it wrong to reject a sentimental gift if it doesn't fit your wedding?

Let me answer that for you: no, it's not! Absolutely not. Listen, I only hope that one day, I get to have a wonderful mother-in-law because some of the stories about them are just pure nonsense. If I were the OP, and it was my wedding, I'd not feel bad at all for refusing to play an AI-generated song that's only going to embarrass me, my fiancé, and his entire family in front of almost 200 people.

I'll say, though, is it a wedding without some family drama? And I don't know why, but mothers-in-law are the ones who become the stars in every single conflict that emerges from a wedding. It's just they are so entitled all the time, thinking the event is more about them than the couple that's getting married. I understand they might feel emotional seeing their babies get married, all grown up, but that doesn't justify an immature attitude towards the daughter-in-law, in this case. 

And, something that I also noticed, is that the partner (the son of the MIL) never has a comment to say about it, or decides to put his own mother in place. Quite the opposite, actually. They tend to avoid those kinds of problems, as if they weren't their own, and continue with their lives. No matter the position he's in, or how entitled the mother is, I believe he's the one who needs to reject the song, and not his partner, who earned the anger and the silence from his own mom.

Weddings are supposed to be fun, and a moment for the whole family to get together and celebrate the couple. It's not worth it to be arguing about something so childish, like a 5-minute song that's not going to be played. I think maybe the nerves make everything more upsetting, and people tend to be more sensitive around these kinds of events… But, it's still a wonderful occasion to leave the egos aside, and to all contribute to make that night a one to remember forever.
