As for today's affectionate kitty, clearly he chose his person from the first moment. One act of kindness was all it took. He was a stray, he was cold, he was hungry, and out of nowhere, a person came to him and gave him the warmth, food and love that he was missing. And now, he repays this person. Every single day, this cat comes to this man's shop and gives him a hug. 

Tuesday: the liminal space between tranquility and torment.

Gone are the days of childlike wonder, of noncommittal internal monologues based on having no responsibilities, no consequences, and no clocks. No clocks to wake up, go to work, or anything else. The joy of being carefree and unobligated to anyone or anything else is something we only get for a smidge of our lives. Teenage boys are hard to deal with whether they're human, cat, or something else! 

It's never easy to manage having many cats, and especially when they're all so different. It's no secret that men are from Mars and women are from Venus, but does it translate to cats as well? It might be apparent from your own experiences with animals, but sometimes they're more like us than we think. Take it from the couple who rescued this teenage stray back in April. He didn't want to be rescued and was quite resilient, but they did end up getting him into their home. He started out quiet, and then he became quite vocal. They realized that he needed to go to the vet, and then the rest got better. Teenage boys will be boys, whether they're cats, dogs, or humans. The couple has 3 adult female cats, and so they wanted to give everyone lots of time to get used to one another. After his recovery from the vet, he joined the sisters for fun time. He wasn't the quickest to learn, but he's come a long way. Now he loves and idolizes his older sisters, but he has mixed feelings as he's still learning to respect boundaries. He's learned about being a housecat from them and picked up some of their behaviors.

Before adopting a new kitten, there is only one creature you need to ask for permission - your cat. 

Being chosen by a kitten feels like one of life's most blessed moments. So pure. So wholesome. So adorable. And if you are a cat person already, then it feels like the biggest gift a universe can give you. A kitten. Oh, our phones would be full to the brim with pictures almost instantly. We would not hesitate to adopt that kitten. Except that's not exactly accurate. We would not hesitate to adopt that kitten, but our cats… well, they might have something to say about it. 

Everyone knows cats rule the household. That's a simple fact. Inarguable. You may be paying the rent for the apartment, but it's not the apartment's legal owner that's letting you live there. No, it's your cat giving you purrmission to live in their space. Without their permission, that apartment wouldn't work. And they don't ask for much. They ask you for food, for the occasional petting session, for their litterboxes to be cleaned, and, of course, for you to not bring home random kittens. They did not sign up for that. You should have made sure with them first. At least the owner in this video knew that. 

There is no arguing with the fact that this kitten chose her. That's just a fact. The kitten was literally waiting for her to come back home from her flight on the steps in front of her house. The kitten wasn't leaving. The kitten wasn't scared. She was just there, ready to be adopted into her new home. The kitten, of course, knew that this was, in fact, her home, so she knew that she would get along with the other cat inside without a problem. But the cat didn't know that, the cat wasn't ready for that, and the cat made his displeasure known. For a while. Until he caved too. Because no one, not even another cat, can withstand the cuteness that is an itty bitty kitty. In no time at all, they were all one loving family. 

Every cat acts like they've never seen a full food bowl in their entire life.

If cats could write grocery lists, it would contain one item: more food. It doesn't matter if breakfast ended two minutes ago or they just walked away from a completely empty bowl. The second someone heads toward the kitchen, they're convinced another meal is on the menu. Out come the dramatic meows, the figure eights around your ankles, and the wide-eyed expressions that make you question whether you've accidentally forgotten to feed them for the past week.

Every cat has its own way of asking for another helping. Some sit quietly by the food bowl and stare into your soul until you crack. One injured kitten was all it took to turn a reluctant foster into a cat mom.

Sometimes the cat you never planned on keeping ends up becoming family. One rescuer learned that after spotting a tiny calico kitten dragging a badly injured leg through their apartment complex parking lot. The kitten disappeared before help arrived, and after days of searching and worrying, it seemed like she was gone for good. Then, five days later, she was spotted hiding in the woods nearby. With help from a local TNR volunteer, the kitten, later named Willow, was finally brought to safety.

Willow wasn't exactly grateful at first. She hissed, swatted, and wanted nothing to do with the person trying to help her. But after weeks of vet visits, patience, and learning that she was finally safe, she slowly let her guard down. Before long, the frightened little kitten who refused to be touched was asking for pets and purring.

As Willow grew more comfortable, it became clear she'd benefit from having another cat around. Enter Bonnie, a shy former feral who had been struggling to adjust in foster care. After a slow introduction, the two became inseparable. Bonnie, later renamed Ivy, helped Willow learn how to simply be a cat, while Willow gave Ivy the confidence to come out of her shell.

Today, the pair spends their days wrestling, cuddling, and looking after each other, while their human can't imagine life without them. What started as an unexpected rescue became a home filled with two cats who helped each other heal in completely different ways. You see, if a cat doesn't feel like they 100% belong where they are, they will find a way to show it. Especially if you let the cat roam - which is another problem in and of itself. This is for all of the pawparents out there who are missing their feline friend a little too much today. Sure, there are days in which spending time at work far from your cat doesn't seem to be as heavy as other days, where the simple idea of leaving home is just awful. I'll be honest - growing up, I was firmly Team Dog. I begged for one every single year, made elaborate PowerPoint-level arguments for why our family needed a golden retriever, and got the same response every time from my mom: "If a dog enters this house, I'm leaving". These were the similar thoughts of this one woman who admitted to not liking cats… on the internet, of all places! Which is the actual digital realm that they rule with an iron paw. How dare she. And despite not being a cat person (her words, not mine), she brought her home. You see, eventually I also adopted my own kitten, and within about a week, I understood absolutely nothing about my past self. It wasn't one big dramatic moment - it was done by a thousand adorable cuts. It was her sprinting across the apartment at 3 AM for no reason whatsoever, or the way she'd headbutt my hand until I gave her attention like she was doing me a favor by allowing it. There were of course the traditional options such as vacuuming, or robot vacuuming if you want to be futuristic about it. But then there were several interesting ideas put forth such as food supplements, baths and more.

But I bet you are asking yourself why would there be some many solutions to a problem that feels as though it is rather singular in nature, after all there either is, or isn't fur in your house and on your clothes. But the truth is that there are two main different schools of thinking on this subject, those who deal with the symptom of the fur and those who deal with the root of the issue, the shedding. I myself am not too sure whether it is possible for just one of these schools of thought to be responsible for a singular fix, but a combination of both might do the trick. At the end of the day a cat is going to shed, you might get most of it in a good brushing session but more will always come out. On the other hand vacuuming is helpful but arduous and time consuming. But put together you might just get the best of both worlds.

 

A 13th year is an important one, and she got to experience it in a special way. 

Norse mythology, certain contexts, and mathematics are just three reasons 13 is a special, or unlucky number. It doesn't mean you have to listen to the hearsay, but 13 does have something in it. 13 as a birthday is usually special because it marks some transition from childhood into the beginning of adulthood. When it's a kid's 13th birthday, it's important that it's made out to be special, like in this story below. The girl went to adopt a cat on her 13th birthday with her father. She meant to get a previously declawed cat, but even though it didn't work out that way she loves her babies all the same. She was looking around, and a white cat was trying very, very hard to escape, and it got her attention. Her open cat carrier was sitting in the room and the white cat politely let herself inside. It was so special to the girl to see that this white cat chose her immediately, without her having to do anything. She looked around a bit more, but ultimately decided on this white one. 

When they were going to go pay for her and fill out the adoption paperwork, another cat came over and joined in. He loved them immediately and started purring. The dad noticed that there was a sign saying, "buy-one-get-one-free deal" for cats that day. They decided it was a sign for them to adopt him as well. The worker was over the moon because he was a void cat who had been there for 3 years without any signs of someone adopting him. They weren't actually declawed before, but the family loves them all the same. They'd rather have scratched couches rather than cats without claws. The void cat is usually standoffish, but not to this family who took him. The two cats latched their claws into the family hearts. Since then, the white cat, Talia, crossed the rainbow bridge. There's never a time when I meet a cat and it isn't just the most cat-like cat to me. Even a white, soft, fluffy, beautiful cat is still...a cat. There's something stripped of sophistication, in the most cat way. 

That's the magic of cats. No matter how elegant they appear, they're always about five seconds away from doing something completely ridiculous. A cat can spend the afternoon perched majestically on a windowsill, gazing thoughtfully into the distance like a philosopher contemplating the meaning of existence, only to have professional zoomies within minutes is what makes cats so cat and heartwarming. The sophistication disappears instantly, replaced by pure, unfiltered cat. And somehow, that only makes them more lovable. Cats are walking contradictions. They're cute and baby shaped, but they're evil and malicious at the last moment. They're just so intensely independent creatures who follow you into the bathroom because apparently privacy is unacceptable. They act deeply offended when you touch them without permission, then climb directly onto your laptop while you're trying to work. They'll reject the expensive bed you lovingly picked out for them and spend six hours sleeping inside the cardboard box it arrived in. Perhaps being "cat" means refusing to make sense.
