This is an incredibly heartwarming story, and it just goes to show that crossing the rainbow bridge isn't the end; it's only the beginning of a new life without the person there physically, but they can still exist in their own way, in your spirit and heart.

We believe that the people who are here right now, reading these stories, are exactly the kind of people who would do something to help a cat in need. In fact, we don't just believe it. We know it. Countless times, our audience members have shared their cat rescue stories with us. You guys have rescued cats from the streets, from long stays in shelters, from car engines, dumpsters and everything in between. We were going to ask what you would have done had you come across the kitten in this story – knowing it was abandoned by its previous family, finding it barely surviving in a storm drain. But we don't need to ask. We know what you would do.

We wouldn't even be surprised if the person who rescued Gio and wrote about it on r/CatDistributionSystem is one of our ICHC readers. The patience they showed, coming back to this cat over and over, gently getting the cat to trust them, allowing the cat to choose them and only then taking them home – that is how a real cat person acts, and it is exactly how we wish everyone in the world could act toward cats in need. More people like this, more stories like this, and the whole world would look a little brighter.

The cat distribution system is something that we wholeheartedly believe in. We didn't at first, when we came across the idea for the first time. It seemed silly to think that cats choose their humans rather than the other way around. But we have come to understand that it's true. It's the only thing that explains all of the strange happenings in the cat adoption world. Why would a dad who hates cats instantly fall in love with the kitten that his kids brought home? Why would a person who got handed a kitten at a drive-through simply be okay with it and take it home? Why would the first thing that the guy who had a kitten fly through its window right into his lap do is ask where to get pet supplies? All for the same reason – the cats were meant to be there.

Sometimes, as is clear by now, the delivery process can be a little strange. You never know when or how a cat is going to find you. We certainly don't think that the person who shared today's story on r/cats had any idea that the cat they saw on their neighbor's porch would end up theirs. The kitty's face was covered in tape. We don't know how – if it was an accident or if someone did something cruel to the cat. We just know this cat first appeared on the neighbor's porch, but that was clearly not where he was supposed to head. Can't blame him for making a mistake. He literally couldn't see properly. It's okay, though. The system, as always, has a way of correcting itself, and Scotch (named after the tape, of course) ended up finding his way to his forever home just fine.  

Working from home sounds peaceful until your cat decides your desk is no longer a workspace. It is a cat bed or their personal throne, but it's apparently not yours anymore. You may be busy and have deadlines, emails, and a packed to-do list, but your feline coworker has other plans. 

Those plans usually involve sitting in front of your computer screen and looking confused about why you still expect to get anything done. The second you start to be productive, they show up, stepping over your keyboard, sitting on your notes, blocking your screen, or knocking your pen to the floor. What should a cat do if their human is the one to cross over the rainbow bridge?

A cat who lost their human has just lost everything. To us, cats are a huge part of our world and essence, of what we are as "cat people". But to cats, their humans are their entire world. To us, our cat is our best friend. To our cat, their human is their only friend. The cat-human connection is everything for a cat - so when a cat loses their human, it can truly be traumatic. And that's exactly what happened to the cat of u/FantasticVast01's neighbor, and so he went to tell the tale to the online feline family.

This one's a cat who belonged to an elderly person. And you know the sad truth - everyone has a time to go, and if it's an old person we're talking about, it's usually a matter of time. And that person… had to go. But their cat had nowhere to go. That's a sad start, for sure, but a cat being a cat is usually what happens - and this cat took matters into his own paws. He walked a street away, right to a family's home, and sort of decided "I live here now."

The problem is that the cat still belongs to the neighbor's family. You see, his daughter moved in, but she's not a cat fan (how could anybody not adore cats, we will never understand - especially if they were already technically family). But as we understand, the family is doing everything in their power to transfer the cat to their home for good, and adopt him officially. Sometimes, a cat changing hands is the best outcome for them. It depends on a lot of parameters, but in this case, it seems like the right solution.

Are cats supposed to be there? The answer, according to cats, is always "yes."

If there's something common to all cats, it's that they all abide by the sacred doctrine of "If I fits, I sits", and contrary to popular belief - it's not restricted to cardboard boxes only. And every cat pawrent is a witness to that, and can attest to their cats fittin' an' sittin' literally everywhere. Even if they shouldn't be there at all in the first place. But cats think otherwise, because cats do what they want, regardless of what others think. Yes, even their own humans.

Cats have turned hide-and-seek into a full-time purrfession. One minute they're demanding snacks, the next they've completely vanished without so much as a jingling collar to give them away. Every cat pawrent knows the routine. The search begins, every room gets checked, and then, somehow, the cat is found sitting exactly where they were the whole time, looking mildly offended that it took so long.

Blending into the background is practically a feline superpower. Blankets become camouflage. Cardboard boxes become secret bunkers. Laundry piles become luxury penthouses. A houseplant suddenly has two eyes staring back from the leaves. She only had to meet one person before making up her mind.

Out of everyone outside that day, this little kitten kept running back to one person, quietly making it clear she'd already picked her human.

A trip to the emergency vet revealed she was only a little over four weeks old. She was malnourished, had coccidia, and was fighting a minor eye infection, but she was tougher than she looked. The first few weeks were filled with medicine, careful monitoring, and plenty of patience while she recovered. It wasn't always easy, but Norah never let her rough start slow her down for long.

Now she's a tiny ball of nonstop energy. She races around the apartment, climbs onto shoulders like she owns the place, and has turned curling up beneath a chin into her favorite nap spot. She's also still learning that fingers aren't toys, something that's pretty common for kittens separated from their mother and littermates too early.

Her name came together on the drive home after Norah Jones started playing through the speakers. The music settled the kitten enough for her to fall asleep in her carrier, and the name felt right from that moment on.

This is the couple's first time raising a kitten, and every day brings something new to learn. They're even considering adopting an older cat to give Norah a feline role model as she grows up. I know how hard and grueling it is to fight for a kitten's life. I adopted my cat when she was a tiny thing, merely a month old, and very, very, very sick. She had probably everything on the stray kittens list - worms in her tiny belly, fungus eating on her fur, and infections that needed attention and care. And let me tell you, it was such a long process to nurse her back to health. But when she finally recovered from everything, she grew to be the most loving, amazing, and best cat I could ever ask for.

I sincerely hope that u/dbone1123 on Reddit just got the best future cat he could ask for, with his tiny Pico de Gato (love the name, by the way). By what he describes, the situation is a little different, but the baseline is the same - he has just adopted a sickly stray kitten, and asks the online feline family members for some advice on how to care for her the best way he can. First of all, I argue that he already does it - with how dedicated he is. And secondly, he might face a tough decision - but it'll leave him with a healthier cat, and… way cooler. Because what's cooler than a pirate cat? Nothing. It's the coolest.

And yes, by "pirate cat" I mean one-eyed cats. It might sound shocking in the beginning, but you'd be surprised at what cats can do with no eyes… everything. Literally everything. So what's one eye off? Cats are surprisingly enduring creatures, they can get through anything. And if one eye is trouble - then off it goes (seriously, it could cause serious issues in the future, and no cat pawrent wants that for their cat child).

After losing a cat, adopting a new one is not an easy choice. But the universe knows if you're a good person who's meant to have cats, and sometimes, it doesn't ask you for permission.

Cats know, somewhere deep in their hearts, where their home is. In the online cat world, we call this the cat distribution system. Once a cat decides it's done with outdoor life, it goes to find a home, and they tend to find the purrfect home on their first try. Because they know where their home is. Losing a cat, especially when you're so bonded, is the worst feeling in the world. I dread the day it will happen with my girl. She's 11 now, but back when she was a 1-year-old, she escaped. For one day. And it was one of the worst days of my life. I didn't know if she would come back. Didn't know how. She fell out of the second-floor window. All night, I was out looking for her, calling for her. And nothing. But exactly 24 hours after disappearing, on the opposite side of the apartment, in an area she had never seen from the outside, she was meowing under my window. And I got her back. Because somehow, despite knowing nothing about the area, she found her way back home. Her home had to have been calling out to her somehow.

Of course, mine was only lost for 24 hours. I was lucky that she came back. The person who shared today's story on r/CatDistributionSystem wasn't so lucky. In a fire, they lost not one, but six cats. When they found Kevin, confidently strolling into their home through the woods nearby, they didn't know if they were ready. But he knew. They were lost, but he found his home, and he gave them new hope.

There's no such thing as an ugly cat. All cats are beautiful. Some are just… really bad in front of cameras.

We think that every cat person has a moment when they are looking through their camera reel and thinking to themselves that, to outsiders, it must look like they have no lives outside of their cats.
