You don't have ownership over something that you gifted away.

When you decide to part ways with something you own, and you gift it or donate it, you lose the ownership of the thing, as ownership is tied to having it. This overly complicated sentence is my way of trying to make the story below less dumb. Because let's face it, it's bananas to expect someone to return something you gifted them just because, after 4 years, you want it back. I think that part of the story is quite obvious. You gifted it, is not yours anymore, easy to comprehend. But there's something under this story that I can't stop thinking about. The fact that the sister dared to ask something so dumb. 
Because of how this story is written, I have reason to believe that the previous owner of the chair usually gets her way about the things she wants. In every family, there's always one person who makes everyone else do as they say. But what's interesting about that is the fact that kind of power is not something they just claim, is something given by other family members.

When you were a kid, didn't you have a cousin or sibling who everyone said yes to just to avoid them throwing a tantrum? Well, have you ever thought what kind of adult someone who was raised like that would be? Not a functioning one, I tell you that. Most of the entitled people we encounter in our adult life are just children who didn't know the word NO. They always got their way and were never actually disciplined, which led to becoming an adult that still expects everyone to do as they say. 
 

The fact that the sister asked for her chair back is a problem, but not because of the chair, but because she expected to get it back just because she wanted it. That is entitlement and lack of discipline. So, if you are a parent who always favors your child with what they want just to avoid a bad situation, don't! Your child needs to learn. By giving up, you are just teaching them that they are the only people that matter, and that is completely untrue. 
 

Should you care about what happens to your home after you sell it?

If my parents ever decide to sell my childhood home and move, my only hope is that they would sell it to a nice, young family who can enjoy the house as much as we did. I hope they will get to play outside in the yard, spend countless movie nights in the TV den, and find the best hiding spots during hide-and-seek. I hope a sweet young girl will get my room, and she will find the scribble I made behind the closet where I thought no one could find it. 

Every house has memories to it, and it makes sense we want them to live forever, even inside these four walls.

Unfortunately for the family in the story below, they know the house they just sold will be torn down, but they got an offer on it that they simply couldn't refuse, and they decided to go for it. Surprisingly, they don't feel so sad about their memories being gone, and the ones who care more about the deconstruction of the house are actually the neighbors living around it.

To them, tearing down the house means a lot of noise, mess, and general headaches that they do not want to deal with. They don't care about the house itself being gone; they simply don't want to deal with everything that comes after that. And frankly, I can completely understand.

However, there's not much they can do to change the situation, and harassing the homeowners who decided to sell is definitely not the answer. Did that stop anyone from still trying, though? Not really…

There's a good reason to keep your cats indoors.

Look, I don't want to stress any fellow cat pawrents reading this, but there are very simple, measurable, and studied parameters about keeping your cat indoors vs. keeping your cat outdoors (full time or part time). Let me just show you the raw details first: While indoor cats often live to 12-18 years, free-roaming outdoor cats have an average lifespan of just 2-5 years. They face severe hazards, including car accidents, predators, infectious diseases, and poisons (many plants are poisonous to cats, for example).

And since most people don't want their cats encountering life-threatening situations often, it makes sense that cat pawrents will keep their cats indoors. Maybe add a nice catio with a great view, but generally - indoor. And that's the harsh truth u/godallid's parents learned. They raised two yard cats, real sweethearts. But the mom refused to let them inside - she was still hurt from losing the family dog a few years back. Now, I never judge the decisions of a grieving pet pawrent - I've never experienced pet loss, and I dread the day I'll have to face it. But this specific decision to keep the emotional distance from the cats, by keeping them physically distant from the house, had very sad consequences.

Just as I've mentioned above, cars are one of the most dangerous things for roaming cats. And unfortunately, one of the cats was hit by one, and passed over the rainbow bridge. It's such a sad, sudden, and horrific way to lose a cat. But that was the horrific shake-up and wake-up call the mom needed - she decided differently, that no more. She's not losing any more pets. The cat has been officially promoted to an indoor prince - just as any cat deserves.

Don't judge a person on how they treat you in private. Judge them on how they treat you when they want to impress somebody else.

When you start dating someone, you always try to show your best face. You dress nicer, have better manners, and try to seem as interesting as possible. There's nothing wrong with that, is normal to want to show the best version of yourself. Problems start when you are a completely different person from the first date to the tenth one. There is a saying that goes "Character is who you are when you're looking for an audience", and I couldn't agree more with it. Truth is, the real version of someone usually appears when other people are present. 

It isn't uncommon to realize that the person you are going out with is disrespectful by how they treat service employees. When they act demanding and mistreat them just because they think they are more important, that shows you exactly the kind of person your date is. A bad one. If they can't respect someone that is trying to do their job, why would you wanna be with them in the first place? Another way for the truth of someone to come out is with friends, like in this Reddit story. When they want to impress their friends and talk badly about you, that is a sign you shouldn't dismiss. That is their truth. How they actually act, how they are below the perfect image they have been projecting onto you. 

Don't ignore the signs. Trust your instincts. When someone is all nice and perfect when you are alone but lacks manners and good values when they are with other people, distrust! You want a partner that is going to be nice to you at all times, not someone that prefers to mistreat you to look cooler to their friends –as if that was even cool. Don't settle for less. You are worthy of a good person. Don't leave your values behind for someone who can't even be nice to you in public.

As a cat mom for years, I want to share my joy of having a cat with the world. What makes a job harder? A complicated coworker or a handful of different bosses who don't communicate with one another? 

Both of these things can drive an employee mad. But dealing with the higher ranks not communicating with each other can lead to much more disaster than having to bear an irritating coworker. After all, coworkers don't usually start blowing up your phone when something is not working the way it should. That is the boss' job. 

An employee shared on r/MaliciousCompliance a time when both issues ended up being connected. He played a joke on a bad coworker, who always managed to annoy everybody, by accessing his computer with the password and changing the screen saver to mock him. Because of this prank, the employee was called to the HR office, where he was suspended for 3 days and told he could never use or share their coworker's passwords again. He did exactly as told and left the office immediately. A few hours later, his boss started calling him, asking him to come back or to give him his password so he could access the reports he needed. The employee said no to both demands, since HR had forbidden him to come back or to share a password. Too bad. 

The thing about bosses not communicating is that they can potentially cause a disaster for which they might end up blaming an innocent employee and make them lose their job. Thankfully, that didn't happen to this employee, but the possibility still exists for others. Bosses are not only responsible for their own work, but for the work of entire teams. And the HR department is the one specifically designed to communicate with all the other departments. Yes, they need to solve any issue that might arise between employees, but they are also responsible for notifying all the other areas of any arrangement regarding those employees, whether it be new hires, suspensions, resignations, or whatever.

A family was heading home after a fun night at a concert when they realized someone had left a phone behind at Buc-ee's. Nobody was thrilled about turning around. Halfway through the drive, everything changed in an instant.

Better yet, it quickly revealed an affectionate personality that made it feel right at home. Before long, what began as an unexpected roadside rescue turned into the newest addition to the family.

The story gets even better. The missing phone wasn't gone after all. A kind stranger had found it at Buc-ee's and turned it in, so it was safely waiting to be picked up.

It's hard not to wonder what would have happened if that phone had never been forgotten. The family would have driven a different route home, the kitten might have remained stranded beside the highway, and this happy ending may never have happened. Sometimes life's biggest surprises arrive disguised as the world's most inconvenient detours.

Spider-sense or nonsense?

Look, I'm not here to question a woman's intuition. Sometimes we know more than we think we know, and when we tell our friends or on Reddit our anecdotal evidence, it comes off as insufficient. To me, this situation could very well be an example of a girl's spider-sense and not an exaggeration, but even if that's the case, I think she went wrong in how she addressed her concerns, or unaddressed them, really. Maybe there's something else she isn't telling us, more clues that she felt all summed up to that moment. Either way, something definitely smells rotten within this relationship.

How odd is it to combine entitlement with being cheap?

Sometimes the people who have the highest demands are the ones who expect to get everything for free. Expensive things and benefits need to be paid for, there's no way around it. 

A hotel employee shared on r/TalesFromTheFrontDesk that a member was after more than he was willing to pay for. He had met the owner by chance, and consistently name-dropped and asked for upgrades in his reservation: a suit, a jacuzzi, and an extra room at $30-$40 a night. So much so that he started doing it informally, simply calling and asking for his usual upgrades. After a few months, peak season began, and the usual rates, reservations, and lists of priorities changed. So Mr. VIP could no longer request an upgrade unless it was through the appropriate channels and with the fixed rates. He did not take it very well and showed up at the front desk to complain and threaten to get the employee fired unless he got him his suite. The employee politely explained that it couldn't be done, so he stormed off in anger. After explaining the situation to management, the employee came to find out that Mr. VIP had been demoted. 

Truth is, a hotel gives a service, and not an essential one. Staying at hotels is a luxury not every person has, so if you want it, you have to be willing to pay for those services. The chance of getting access to lower rates is a benefit that hotels give to faithful clients, not a right someone can demand. Name-dropping and threatening to fire people is not ethical nor something any client has the right to do. If someone wants something expensive, they have to know it's going to cost them. Being cheap does not mesh well with being entitled.

Is there such a thing as being too much of a cat lady?

I'll be honest, I absolutely love having a cat lady as a neighbor. First of all, there's almost a 100% chance she'll stop to say hi to every cat wandering around the neighborhood, which immediately makes me trust her. Second, she's probably the person who knows every local cat by name, personality, and favorite napping spot. That's the kind of dedication I can respect.

I also feel like cat ladies have mastered the art of minding their own business while somehow still knowing everything that's happening on the block. They're not standing outside looking for gossip. They just happen to be watering their plants when Mr. Whiskers strolls by, and somehow they know exactly which house he belongs to and where he disappeared yesterday afternoon.

The best conversations usually start with, "Have you seen the orange cat today?" and somehow end twenty minutes later with stories about cats that lived there fifteen years ago. I don't even mind it. I could happily spend an afternoon listening to someone explain why one neighborhood cat refuses to walk on the sidewalk but happily crosses everyone's yard instead.

Honestly, every street deserves at least one person who's willing to put out a bowl of water on a hot day or keep an eye out when someone's cat sneaks outside. The world could use a few more people who care that much about tiny furry neighbors. Even if they have a house full of cat figurines and enough treats to feed every feline within a three-block radius, I think they're doing something right.

I'm sorry, but WHAT are we doing here? This man didn't just buy a dining table. He apparently opened the world's least welcoming host, where guests (family) are sorted into sections based on a furniture weight limit. Babe... it's Thanksgiving, not airport baggage check.

Listen, I understand wanting to take care of expensive furniture. I fluff my couch pillows when people leave. I panic a little when someone sets a sweaty drink on a wooden table without a coaster. That's normal. But creating a seating chart based on your relatives' body size? Printing name cards? Making people sit off to the side on folding chairs while everyone else gets the "premium experience"? That is next-level commitment to making family dinner feel like the Hunger Games.

And don't even try to sell it as "just being practical." If it were really about practicality, there were about a hundred better solutions. Buy sturdier chairs. Use folding chairs for everyone. Eat outside. Have a buffet. Sit on picnic blankets. Literally anything besides publicly announcing, "Congratulations! You qualify for the nice chair. You... not so much."

It's tough being a cat pawrent for the first time, but luckily for cat people, we have each other to lean on.

I remember the first few weeks with my beloved cat. She was a teeny tiny kitty, a month and a half old, and very sickly. But I adopted her, and knew with a full heart that she's now my responsibility. But… I had no idea what to do. First of all, a vet visit was a great first step, needed for every new cat you adopt. But a vet is there when your cat needs treatment or a checkup - it's not an immediate solution for things you need to know right meow, if your cat needs it. And that's where the online feline family comes in.

And that's exactly what u/la_cati99 did - she and her husband adopted a cat from an adoption event they went to, which is such a wholesome deed in and of itself. But they were never cat people. They raised a dog, who sadly passed away a couple of years ago, but as many people already told them in the comment section, raising a dog is nothing like raising a cat. They are both the best experiences a person can have (and also for the adopted cat or dog), and they do have some similarities between them, but dogs and cats are different.

But that's why I think this woman and her husband are smart people - they turned to the wisdom of the masses. And when it comes to cat people, the masses are always there to help. Seriously, cat people from all over the world are always ready to give advice for first-time cat parents, because they know this one simple truth - when you help a fellow cat parent, you help their cat by extension. And helping cats is something all cat people are always happy to do.

Reading this comment section made me remember the times when I was a new cat pawrent myself. But now that I already know how to care for my cat and cats in general, I'm happy to see how helpful the online cat community is for other first-time cat pawrents in need of help. It warms the heart to see cat people helping each other.

I am a purroud subject in my cat's kingdom.

Basically, everything in my apartment was done with my cat in mind, to cater to her needs, wants, whims, and desires. For example, I insisted that the closet in my bedroom doesn't come with regular doors, but the sliding kind. This is because I wanted to make sure I can leave the closet doors open at all times, without the doors taking so much space from the room. That's because I wanted to make sure my cat can always jump inside and nap on the sheets or on my shirts, if she wants to. She does that from time to time, and I'm happy to provide her a comfy place to take a cat nap.

Another thing I did just for my cat is to make sure she has a supervision spot above the cupboards, for when she wants to judge how I cook in the kitchen. I store stuff up there, above the upper cupboards (like paper towels and boxes of cleaning wipes) - but I made sure to arrange them in a maze shape, and not in line next to each other. That's all for my cat, of course - so she can jump up there and choose her favorite spot to look at me from above. As she was meant to do. She is my cat queen, and I am but her puny peasant servant.

And me? I am happy to serve my beautiful queen. She's been the ruler of my life for years now, and I'm not about to demote her ever. I cater to her every need, I make sure she has the best life pawssible, and I will give anything - money, time, energy - to make sure my cat is happy. I know this is a sentiment shared by many cat pawrents, and I just wanted to make sure you know we're all in the same boat here. The boat of living under a feline overlord - but happily so. Cats rule us - and we're overjoyed about the fact.

You can always leave a note.

There is a sense of entitlement that is related to the fact that someone did something that you didn't like. As if that made it available for you to do something that is wrong. Like a chain of bad acts, where someone does something improper, maybe even by mistake, so the person affected decides to avoid common sense when responding to that act. That is what happened in this Reddit story. The user who shared this story was being a bad neighbor by not taking care of his pet's waste and letting it sit on the land of his nearby resident. That was wrong, and there is no doubt about that. But the neighbor's landscaper going into this user's home expecting someone to be inside and demanding to be answered at the door is quite odd, especially when he didn't receive a response. A normal course of action would have been to leave a note at the door or to try at a different time. But no, here's when the entitlement kicks in. He thinks that the most rational idea is to go over the fence and into his garden to try to get the attention of the person inside the home. 

This is not only a felony, as it is trespassing, but it's also the worst idea. He felt that just because the neighbor was doing something wrong, that made it right for him to do something even worse. Society does not work like that. We cannot be upselling bad habits till we all are bad people. To something incorrect, you respond civilly, not by making it worse. It takes two seconds to realize that bad is not solved with worse. 

This type of entitlement felt by the lack of manners of somebody else makes you look even worse. What the other person did was bad, but you should calmly speak to that person, not get into his house without an invitation. To be civil is a choice that everyone should be making. Use your good judgment, act like you want other people to act, set the example!
 

Isn't it time to paws for a second, take a deep breath and focus on some cats? 

Going 100 miles a minute is not the solution. It never is. Going through life rushing through everything is not healthy. Things will wait. Right now, you're sitting with your phone in your hand, and we can bet that you're tense, that you're doing ten things at the same time. Let your shoulders drop. When you're washing your hair in the shower, slow down, your scalp will thank you. When you're drinking your coffee in the morning, take your time, savor it. Speeding might save you a few minutes, but you're risking a whole lot more. And that's true for everything in your life. Sometimes, you just need to stop, take a deep, long breath, and enjoy some wholesome cat memes. 

All of it is not that simple, obviously, and I have to remind myself to slow down all the time too. Cute and silly cats - that's my way of doing it. I could scroll through social media some more, but I know what I'll find there. Chaos and overstimulation. Whereas when it comes to logging onto ICHC and scrolling through some simple cat memes is something that helps me retain my balance. It's something simple. And it's something that I actually want to savor. I know that scrolling through cat memes will be better for my mental health than most of the other things that I can do online. Since when has paying for others' expensive belongings been a thing? 

There is this saying: 'You break it, you buy it'. But there is a huuge line from there to having to take responsibility for something you did not lose or break. This poor woman was enjoying a fun time with her friend, playing on her shoulders; next thing you know, she is responsible for the missing jewelry. In what world would that be her fault? Darling, if you wear a 1,0000 dollar earring into the ocean, you best believe they are going to get lost. And no, Miss Ariel won't come back from the deep, dark ocean to give it back. I do not understand how it could be acceptable to ask your friend for the money. 

If the scenario looked something like this, then the conversation would be different: her friend lent her the jewelry and told her to be extra careful because they were expensive, then her friend went ahead and lost them. Well, of course, paying back would make sense. But in this scenario? It just seems pretty childish and inconsiderate to me. If you consider asking for the money back the right thing to do, then I respect being upfront and forward (which still sounds kind of insane to me). But ending a relationship and blocking your friend over that is so immature and childlike. I think people sometimes have to accept that things will not always go their way; sometimes you wear your favorite piece of jewelry to the ocean, and they get lost. Is it ideal? Of course not, but that's life, and at the end of the day, let's be real; it was an earring you lost, not some emotionally valuable belonging.

As Kourtney said to Kim K when losing her diamond earring in the Maldives, 'Kim, there are people that are dying'. So not to imply that the only thing that matters are life-altering situations, but this one in particular seems a little bratty and over the top for what was actually going on. So if I were you, I would be glad this experience unmasked the kind of person your friend truly is, and what her priorities are. Clearly, money comes first, and the rest is just a replaceable extension of her life. Move on and let her be.
