A Wisconsin renter's transition to a new landlord took an unexpected turn when the property's electricity was shut off because the owner never transferred the utility account into his name. Even though the tenant immediately explained the problem, the landlord initially insisted it wasn't his responsibility. The power was eventually restored three hours later, but the incident left the renter wondering whether the utility setup and the landlord's mistake could have legal consequences.

I really don't like when problems arise about things that are so easy to confirm. In this case, the landlord is explaining that it was the tenant who had to transfer the utility account to get power, and even though this was not the arrangement he had with the previous landlord, it's what he had to do. Now, this is not what should have happened, according to the tenant.

Apparently, it's the homeowner's responsibility to have these situations sorted out before renting a property, and since he had bought the duplex recently, he was the one who should have gone and fixed this issue. I do wonder if anyone didn't check the lease before ranting at each other? Or in the state's law… Before jumping around and having everyone debate who was right and who was at fault, it would have been easier to fix this issue by just checking some papers.

Since I'm a renter, I do understand the great importance of having a good relationship with your landlord. There's a lot of money involved, and we are still talking about someone's home, so having a good and respectful bond is going to be key for everyone to be at peace. I hope this tenant has the chance to fix the relationship with the new landlord, since he's been living in the duplex for almost a decade.

The moment three or more cats gather in one place, official feline business is underway.

Nobody is quite sure how they got elected, but they're impossible to replace.

Every so often, the council pauses to stare directly at a human. No words are exchanged, but the message comes through loud and clear: your recent decisions are under review. The food bowl situation remains unacceptable. Closing the bathroom door continues to be controversial. Additional treats may help your case, but no promises.

Meetings rarely end in an orderly fashion. One crinkle of a treat bag or the sound of dinner being prepared is enough to dissolve the entire council in seconds. At what point does friendship come before one's work ethic?

Working alongside a friend can be extremely tricky. It can either go really well or terribly wrong. Now recommending a friend for a position at a company you work in can be even more complicated. Stakes are high, expectations are high, and so is the pressure. You would never want your coworkers to think you only recommended someone because they are your friend, and not because you think they are totally qualified for the job. 

This user recommended their friend for a position at their job. Things seemed to be going smoothly until they found out they were not only paying someone else to do their job, but also leaking confidential information from the company while doing so. Now I can't imagine being in a position where I'd have to choose between my work ethic and covering up a friend, but this is just a matter of ethics in life. Not only was your friend generous enough to hook you up with a job offer, but you wasted your opportunity by not doing your job and, even worse, compromising your friend's job. 

I think people are getting way too comfortable with getting away with stuff. And not to make this an AI lecture, but with the rise of AI, ownership and responsibility are becoming more of a premium trait rather than a baseline that we should all instinctively follow. The thought of not understanding why paying somebody else to do a task you are getting paid to do, and violating confidentiality, is wrong and cheap sounds insane to me. 

And not only did this woman betray her friend at work, but she also put their whole friend group against OP. I know some people don't take their job as seriously, but others take their profession as seriously as their personal life; and they shouldn't be punished or shamed for it. This person decided to call her friend out at work, and as a result, got blocked and blacklisted by the entire friend group.

To pass the smell test

I felt really identified with this story because I've had to deal with this issue multiple times in my life. I don't mean with my body odor, lol; I mean with being very sensitive to smells in general. Of course, this story is not about one person's sensitivity to smell, because everyone could smell it, but it does touch on a very difficult subject: having to talk to a person about something so delicate and tricky. Have you ever had to do this? How did you approach it?

Doing the right thing is not always easy, especially when it comes to cats. 

We can't save all cats ourselves. This is something I learned very quickly. Cats are territorial, cats take up space, they need their own space, they need their peace. I didn't grow up with cats, so I didn't quite understand that. And when I adopted my first kitten, a part of me believed I could save them all. She was so purrfect. Healthy and calm and sweet. What's the harm in bringing in the building cats that I feed? Except it's not that easy. First of all, there are too many of them, and my apartment is too small and with a balcony on the 13th floor. Second of all, all cats have their own purrsonalities, and mine is a skittish, shy one, who doesn't love new creatures in her space. And third, I'm not sure all those stray cats would want to be adopted. 

Still, there is a right and wrong thing to do. That is what the person who shared their story on r/CatDistributionSystem has learned. You may not be able to adopt all cats yourself, but help is something that you can offer to basically every single cat. This person already had three cats. They couldn't adopt mom, dad and their four kittens, and adopting just one kitten would have meant separating siblings. So, as painful as it was, this person did the right thing and didn't adopt. She helped the mother and four kittens get TNR'd, helping them get to a shelter and giving the kittens the chance to get adopted in pairs. The father, who refused to be caught, they will continue feeding and helping. And the mother… if she has trouble getting adopted, there is someone out there who's willing to add one more cat to their bunch if need be. 

Sometimes a simple office rule can change the course of the company entirely.

We are so used to maintaining things in our jobs that we aren't looking for ways to improve. We are used to having a meeting every Wednesday at 11 a.m. to discuss goals. Is the meeting necessary? Does it need to happen every week? Should it be an hour long? Nobody knows or cares. We just assume that if we have it, we need it. Someday, someone starts looking into the company's productivity and realizes that every Wednesday we see a decrease in work getting done. What's the point of having a job if the boss doesn't actually let you work?

We can say we don't want to work as much as we want, but the reality is that we all need the money, and having a job that gives you nothing to do eventually becomes really boring. Yes, we need a job because we need to earn enough money to afford existing; there is no way around it. But even if you find a job that pays well, if you don't actually do anything all day, you will find yourself looking for tasks to do just to pass the time.

The barista who shared their work problems below had neither, which basically means they didn't really have a job to begin with. It makes sense that the only solution they had was resigning altogether.

It started when they took a job in a local coffee shop 7 months ago, and for the first 6 months, everything went well. They had shifts, they did the job, and they earned money. A solid job. Then, a new manager rolled in who, for some reason, started picking favorites among the staff. This led him to stop scheduling this one employee altogether, which meant that they were forced to go through a whole week without working. The only way they could go around the manager's decision was if they picked up someone else's shift, but that is no way to hold a job or earn a livable wage.

The employee then discovered that the manager only schedules people he deems "excited to work", which is a really horrible excuse to use when you're stopping people from making a living. And since the employee is currently making no money at all in this job, they realized it makes no sense to keep it.

Is it really a compromise if only one person keeps compromising?

Traveling with your partner sounds incredibly romantic... until you're standing outside a restaurant you've been dreaming about for months, only to hear, "There's nothing I can eat here." Suddenly, your carefully planned foodie experience turns into another 20 minutes of scrolling through Google Maps looking for somewhere that works for everyone. And after a while, I'd be lying if I said that wouldn't get a little frustrating. 

Listen, I am a vegetarian myself, but if there is something I've learnt, it is to adapt. I think people sometimes confuse respecting your lifestyle with reorganizing their entire life around it. Sometimes we have to remember that lifestyle is our choice, not theirs. And they should have the possibility to choose freely as well. Yes, even if it involves a meat menu. 

This woman hasn't cooked meat at home for three years; she plans restaurant reservations around her partner's diet, actively looks for vegetarian spots when they travel, and has already skipped countless local dishes because she wanted both of them to enjoy the trip together. To me, that's what compromise actually looks like. It's consistent, thoughtful, and made out of respect. I think it is a pretty good deal. 

What doesn't feel like compromise is expecting every destination, every restaurant, and every meal to revolve around one person's dietary restrictions forever, especially when you're visiting another country where food is such a huge part of the culture.

And here's the thing: she never asked her partner to suddenly become a carnivore. People online love turning everything into an all-or-nothing debate, but that's not what happened here. She wasn't saying, "Eat the steak." She was saying, "Let's accept that not every restaurant will have five amazing vegetarian choices, and that's okay."

At the end of the day, I don't think this is really about vegetarianism. It's about sharing experiences. Food is one of the easiest ways to understand a place, and if your partner has spent years making space for your choices, making a little space for theirs every once in a while doesn't sound unreasonable; it sounds like what being in a partnership is supposed to look like.

What better birthday present is there than a surprise delivery from the Cat Distribution System?

As you get older, birthdays just ain't what they used to be. When we were kids, we were surrounded by our friends for 8 hours, then we would go home to the smell of a cake in the oven, and have just enough time to get excited again for all of our friends to come over a few hours later to celebrate. Gifts, playtime, cake, balloons, the whole shebang. But all of that is long gone by now - birthdays in your 30s look like an average day at work, unless you're lucky, and your coworkers chip in and get you a cake for you to all munch on at lunchtime. 

If you're married, you might get to go out for a birthday drink, but with kids, that usually has to wait until you can schedule the babysitter. And if you're single, well, you're entirely dependent on your friends to hopefully be free on your birthday in order to join you. It has none of the excitement from your younger days, and is the most accurate representation of "adulting" we can think of.

Birthdays when you're single are the hardest, and even worse if you've just gone through a breakup. At the very least, you should treat yourself to a birthday dinner, but it's hard to have the confidence to do that alone. However, the good news is that you might just find a fuzzy friend on the way! While driving to his solo birthday dinner, one guy spotted… something: a rat, a squirrel - he wasn't sure - scampering in the bike lane. He pulled over and discovered the tiniest tortoiseshell kitten we've ever seen. He scooped her up, named her "Trixie the Runaway", and the two lonely souls became one.

Now, neither of them will ever celebrate a birthday alone, and the thought of that just makes our cat-shaped hearts feel all warm and fuzzy. Best birthday present ever!

You can't just take a resignation letter as a request. The decision has already been taken. They are leaving, and there's nothing you can do about it.

Deciding to leave a job position after years is really hard, especially if you don't have a backup yet. It takes guts to stand up to your boss and say, "This is my resignation letter. I'm leaving in a couple of weeks". Is hard, it takes pride, and it's extremely valuable. You have the right to leave your job, and doing so with notice is great. You avoid leaving on bad terms, and you even offer to train the person who will take your place. It shows character.

The story below shows us a person with enough pride and courage to do this. To tell their boss they were leaving in a couple of weeks. But instead of the boss reacting normally with an "okay" or a "good luck!" They just got a childish manager who decided to respond to the letter with "I need a few weeks to let him know his thoughts on it." What? There is nothing to think about. The decision is made, the letter has been sent, and the employee is leaving. That's it. There is nothing to think about nor anything to express the manager's thoughts on. The employee is leaving, and that is finalized. He was just kind enough to let his boss know beforehand so he could start interviewing people for the position.

The fact that the boss did this instead of simply saying goodbye proves the employee is making the right decision by leaving. He is separating himself from a toxic boss and workplace that couldn't even handle an open position professionally. And what makes everything worse is the fact that the new hire that is taking his place is going to actually get a better salary and a better job description.

This employee should have left before. Staying at a company where not even your boss values you enough to give you a raise, but they don't hesitate to do it for a new hire, is proof that you are better off. Go on to your new adventure and forget everything about this toxic job. 
 

There are some stories that don't just pull on your heartstrings, but yank them until you have no choice but to tear up. This is one of those stories.

We cover a lot of stories that have a wholesome, happy ending (don't worry, this one does too), but we often don't know a lot about what happens before. Stray cats don't come with a browsing history of where they've been and how long they've been living outside, and abandoned kittens can't tell you who dumped them and where. But in today's story, we actually do know where the rescue kitten came from - he was loved, but we all know that love doesn't put cat food on the table.

Giving up or rehoming a cat is one of the hardest things you can do as a pawrent. It's also, if done for the right reasons, one of the most selfless things you can do. As we said before, love doesn't put cat food on the table, so if you can't give your fur baby the life they deserve, then you have to let go of them and try to find somewhere they will. It's like pulling out a piece of your heart and giving it to someone else, but as painful as it is, it will be less painful than watching the pet you love more than life itself suffer. 

Even reading about our cat dad below, who fell on hard times and begged gas station customers to adopt his "babby" kitten, makes our eyes well up with tears. It takes a true man to ask others for help without shame, and this man did it for the sake of giving his kitten a better life. Luckily, one kind soul decided to honor his wishes and adopt "babby".

The most dangerous coworkers are the ones who never look guilty

Starting a new career is challenging enough without wondering whether a more experienced coworker is quietly setting you up to fail. One legal assistant believes a veteran employee has perfected the art of giving just enough misleading advice to shift blame onto others while maintaining a helpful reputation. After several suspicious incidents, they turned to the internet for advice on protecting themselves and documenting future interactions.

Some workplace problems are obvious. A coworker misses deadlines, raises their voice, or openly refuses to help. Those situations are frustrating, but at least everyone can see what's happening. Cats never cease to amaze us with how they get adopted.

There's something every fellow feline fan needs to understand about the Cat Distribution System and how it works (even though that'll probably always remain an industry secret) - while it's here to connect cats in need with the right person or family who will adopt them, or be an integral stop on their way to a forever home, the CDS also takes the human side into account. Take this story, for example, about a man finding a random cat in his apartment, giving him the home he needed - just when he experienced a harsh time in his life that the cat helped him to go through. Seemingly random, but if you've read more than one cat adoption story in your life, you can recognize the work of the Cat Distribution System when you see it. It might seem like an innocent coincidence with a happy ending, but cat lovers actually know it's much more than that.

And that's exactly what happened to this man here, who found a kitten on the loneliest birthday he has ever experienced. He said he was fresh off a breakup - so probably planned to celebrate his birthday with his partner, who was no longer there. But that's when the magic of the Cat Distribution System came in, in the form of a meowing kitten at the side of the road, demanding help - but also willing to help the person in return. It's really not clear who needed who the most in that moment.

Bitterly Fit

There is a strange type of comfort one gets by thinking there is nothing one can do about one's own fitness. It goes something like this: 'It's not my fault; no matter what I do, this is my body, and this is who I'll always be.' When something happens and shows us that's far from reality, contrary to what we'd expect, it's not positive news; it means we can do something to change it, and that something takes effort. Also, all this takes us back to how we got there in the first place, and we can no longer say it was destiny; we have to admit it was always our responsibility (for the most part), and that is not an easy thing to admit.

Even if you share the same private road, a homeowner's explicit refusal is not permission to approve construction and demand money from them afterward. If residents are expected to divide the cost of paving, they should first receive an estimated price and an opportunity to agree to the work.

A Minnesota homeowner learned that their neighbor apparently followed a very different process. About a year earlier, the neighbor proposed paving the upper half of their private dirt road to reduce the dust created by passing vehicles. The homeowner said no. He had recently purchased his house, and eliminating the dust wasn't a priority, considering his household budget. Besides, the existing road remained in good condition with no potholes. 

The homeowner believed the plan had been abandoned… Until he left home one day and discovered a construction company preparing to spread chipped asphalt. Nobody had warned him that the work was moving forward. All the same, he was asked for his "share" of the cost. But the homeowner hadn't even seen the construction invoice. He didn't even know how much money was being demanded. If there's nothing in the deed, then this homeowner shouldn't have to pay for work he didn't approve.

In fact, the neighbor was the one who wanted a paved road. Despite the homeowner's "no", he proceeded, and now he demands payment? No way. Before the homeowner hands over anything, the neighbor should at minimum produce the invoice, explain the agreement they believe applies, and demonstrate why someone who never approved the project supposedly owes a share. What's more, a person who independently commissions a project assumes the risk that others can refuse to finance it. So the neighbor is the one responsible for this, and also the people who may have agreed to the project. 

Can you be a dog person and still fall for cats?

I have a confession to make. I have always considered myself a dog person. If someone asked me to choose between spending an afternoon with a room full of puppies or a room full of kittens, I wouldn't even need a second to think about it. Dogs have always felt familiar to me, probably because that's what I grew up around. My parents never liked cats, so they were never really part of my world. To me, they seemed distant, unpredictable, and honestly a little intimidating.

That started to change over the past few years, mostly thanks to a couple of friends who absolutely adore their cats. Every time I'd visit, I'd find myself watching them do... well, cat things. They'd spend twenty minutes staring out a window like they were contemplating the meaning of life, suddenly sprint through the house for no reason, then curl up beside someone as if they had planned that moment all day. The more I paid attention, the more I realized I had completely misunderstood them.

Cats don't show affection the same way dogs do, and I think that's what confused me for so long. Dogs wear their emotions on their sleeves. They're excited when you come home, they want to be involved in everything you do, and they're usually ready for an adventure at any moment. Cats are different. They choose their moments, and when they decide to trust you, it feels surprisingly meaningful. It's quieter, but no less genuine.

I've also realized something that probably should have been obvious from the beginning: loving dogs doesn't mean you can't appreciate cats too. They're completely different animals, and that's exactly why there's room for both. One isn't trying to replace the other. They each bring something unique into people's lives, and I finally understand why so many people can't imagine living without a cat.

And they aren't frightened by garlic, which is another point. Garlic won't do a thing to them, but a vacuum cleaner certainly will.  

Whatever secrets they keep, their humans are safe if they provide breakfast and dinner on schedule. Cats are only interested in food, attention, and occupying the warmest sleeping spot in the house, even if it is your chair. So prepare to enter a feline castle full of feline yawns and adorably sharp teeth. Count Catula and the rest of his fanged fellas are awake and always ready to sink their teeth into cardboard boxes. Or that plate of chicken you left unattended on the table.
