Growing up in the country can be a mysterious and enlightening experience. The vastness, the lack of modernity, and the rural nature can really play a big role in someone's values and personality. Living in the country is like having an adventure everyday. You have to walk more to get places, and you could even feel like the world is your oyster. Imagine being a 10 year old girl and growing up in the country. In the story here, they were the only family in the neighborhood who had a fenced-in yard. One night, their dog, Jewel, was outside for the bathroom as usual when she suddenly started barking. It wasn't her normal bark, it was a scared and urgent bark. The little girl's mom calls Jewel, but to her surprise she doesn't come, so the whole family goes out to get her since they thought she was injured. They didn't find an injured Jewel, but instead they found two baby kittens crying in the backyard. One was orange, and the other grey. The orange had some attitude, but the grey was delightfully friendly. They weren't sure if there was a mom looking for them, so they look them to the porch, brought them some food, and waited until the next morning. 

The next morning, the kittens were still there. They decided to contact the grandma to see what she had to say. They discussed their options, and that's when the little girl named each cat, and decided they weren't going anywhere. The grey one they named Parry, and ended up keeping her, but the orange they gave to a friend. It's always so wholesome and interesting to reminisce about how your cat found you, and that's what makes this story so adorable. The little girl is now an 18 year old teenager, but she can still look back and reflect on her luck that day. When you live in the country, it's always precious to find beauty in everyday things. 

When life gives us a kitten at work, it's only reasonable that we'd take her home. 

Life isn't always easy. There are ups and downs, and the unexpected could happen at any moment. Saturday is finally here, which means it's time to cancel those plans you were already hoping would get canceled for you.

Introvert cats figured out the ideal weekend routine a long time ago. Stay home, get comfortable, keep social interaction to a minimum, and only leave your favorite spot when food becomes involved. No reservations need to be made. Nobody needs to decide where to meet. There's no standing around at a crowded bar wondering how much longer you have to stay before leaving becomes socially acceptable.

For these felines, a successful Caturday requires very little. A warm blanket, a quiet corner, a few treats, and an entire afternoon with nowhere to be will do just fine. The group chat can keep buzzing. Whatever is happening outside can happen without them.

It's hard to argue with that kind of weekend.

Cats never seem concerned that they're missing out by staying home. There's always another nap to take, another patch of sunlight to lie in, or several uninterrupted hours available for staring out the window. That sounds like a pretty solid Saturday compared to putting on real clothes and making small talk with people you barely know.

Finding one unexpected cat is classic Cat Distribution System behavior, but finding an entire family under your house feels like hitting the feline jackpot.

It started when the family dog, Shep, kept circling the house like he could smell something underneath it. His hoomans checked a few times but couldn't find anything unusual. Weeks later, a skinny mama cat appeared on the back porch, and they started leaving kibble out for her.

Then came the real surprise.

A few days later, one of the hoomans walked into the attached laundry room and found mama covered in kittens. She had apparently been using the crawl space to sneak into the enclosed room, where she had five fuzzy babies hidden away. Mystery solved. Shep had been onto them long before the humans were.

The setup worked until neighborhood cats discovered mama's hideout and a tomcat started trying to get inside. Her new hoomans called rescues looking for somewhere safe to send the family, but everyone was already full. So, despite having two cats of their own, they took matters into their own hands.

Mama was bribed into a carrier with catnip, all five kittens were apprehended, and the furry crime ring headed to the vet. The babies are around four weeks old, and everyone is now being treated for hookworms.

Their accommodations have also received a serious upgrade. The entire family is quarantined in the spare bedroom with toys, regular meals, a litter box, and plenty of room to get comfortable. Mama has already figured out indoor living pretty quickly.

The goal is to eventually find trusted homes for most of the kittens because eight cats under one roof might be pushing it. Two, however, are officially staying.

Five kittens entered the house as wanted criminals, and two have already been sentenced to life with the family.

Cats will get what they want, no matter what they have to do for it. 

All cat owners find this out in one way or another - cats are way smarter than people give them credit for. People who don't own cats only know them from the internet. They know them from funny and cute cat videos online. They know them from the silly cat memes online that constantly go viral. They don't know cats on a day-to-day basis. They don't know the chaos that they bring. And we're not talking about cats knocking something off the table every once in a while. That one single time, one reaction, one mistake, and it was game over. Now, she does this multiple times a day, and the noise is so bothersome that I really do get up and give her what she wants. All cats are like this. Don't underestimate them. Don't be surprised by it. Cats outsmart their humans every single day. It is a good thing that we love them as much as we do.

In less than a month, the school year starts. We're not ready, and neither are these cats!

Summer vacation was the highlight of every year growing up. Unlimited time with friends, road trips with the family to the beach or to amusement parks, and lots and lots of time in the water. Now, as adults with our own kids, summer vacation is a whole other beast. You have to work full time and figure out what to do with your kids for 8-12 weeks. One of the best ways to entertain them (and tire them out because, honestly, we're tired too and could use some peace and quiet) was to take them to the beach. You need at least one sandy adventure before the school year begins, and this year, we're taking our cats with us. 

You might be surprised how much cats love the beach. Some of them even enjoy getting in the water! It's obviously easier to take them there as kittens so they get used to it, but if your cat is harness-trained, they will probably enjoy going with you to dig in the sand, hear the sound of the ocean, and try to catch one of those pesky seagulls. Just make sure to keep them as cool as pawssible by providing ample shade and water for them.

As we're coming closer to the end of summer, it's impurrtant to take some time to relax for the chaos that comes with a new school year. That's the belief the global cat community was built on, and it's one worth repeating every time a story comes along that proves it true. What gets us every time about stories like this one is the reminder that a rough beginning never has to define the whole story. Cats who start out fragile, orphaned, or barely clinging to life don't come with an asterisk on their worthiness. They don't love any less, purr any less, or deserve any less of a soft bed and a full bowl than a kitten born into the easiest circumstances imaginable. If anything, the ones who had to fight the hardest for their shot often end up loving the hardest too, like they know exactly how precious that second chance really is.

Even a Dog Person Has to Admit That Cats Know How to Make the Internet Better

I have made my position on this very clear: I am a dog person. If you put a puppy and a kitten in front of me and tell me I can only take one home, I'm going for the puppy without even thinking about it. Dogs have my heart, and I don't see that changing anytime soon. But being loyal to the doggos doesn't mean I can't appreciate just how ridiculously wholesome cats can be.

Because when cats decide to be sweet, they really know what they're doing. There is something about watching a tiny kitten fall asleep in someone's arms or seeing two cats curled up together that immediately makes the internet feel like a nicer place. Even their little faces can do the trick. One slow blink from a fluffy cat looking completely comfortable with its human, and suddenly I'm questioning whether I should expand my definition of being a dog person.

What I find especially funny is how differently cats and dogs show affection. Dogs usually leave absolutely no room for interpretation. You walk through the door after being gone for 20 minutes, and they react as if you've returned from a five-year expedition. 

Cats make you work for it a little more. They might sit next to you instead of on you, follow you into another room while pretending it was their idea, or finally decide to cuddle at the exact moment you need to get up. And maybe that's part of what makes their wholesome moments so adorable. When a cat chooses someone, it feels like an achievement. You've somehow passed a test you didn't even know you were taking.

So yes, my loyalty still belongs to the pups. But I can put that aside for a few minutes to enjoy 22 cats being incredibly sweet, cozy, affectionate, and occasionally ridiculous. The internet can be a chaotic place, and sometimes what we really need is a bunch of fluffy felines reminding us that there's plenty of softness hiding between all that noise. Tomorrow, though, somebody better send me some dog memes.

Laundry machines were invented to wash clothes, but cats seem to think we installed them as tiny circular apartments.

Leave the washer or dryer open for a minute and suddenly there's a feline sitting inside, looking perfectly pleased with their new accommodations. It's dark, enclosed, and just the right size for curling up. Basically, everything a cat looks for in prime real estate. The fact that hoomans occasionally need to put clothes in there is apparently not their concern.

Then there's the ultimate feline luxury: laundry fresh out of the dryer.

Nothing attracts a cat quite like a warm pile of clean clothes. You can have three expensive cat beds scattered around the house, but the second those freshly dried towels hit the couch, someone is making a beeline for them. Within minutes, the pile has a cat-shaped dent in the middle and your plans to fold everything have been postponed indefinitely.

We can't really blame them. If someone regularly delivered a mountain of warm blankets directly to us, we'd probably climb in too. Cats simply have the confidence to assume every cozy thing that enters the house was purchased specifically for them.

Of course, freshly washed laundry comes with one major flaw: it doesn't have enough cat hair on it yet. Luckily, your feline is happy to handle quality control. One nap later, everything has been properly re-furred and is ready to return to the closet.

Cat pawrents quickly learn to inspect machines before starting them and accept that warm laundry may never make it to the folding stage without feline interference. Laundry day isn't really laundry day until somebody has claimed the basket, occupied the dryer, or fallen asleep on the clean towels.

Imagine clocking in for a normal work-from-home Monday and clocking out as a first-time cat pawrent.

One couple was working with their sliding door open when a calico casually wandered into the living room. They figured she would look around, satisfy her curiosity, and eventually leave. Apparently, nobody had explained that plan to the cat.

They did everything responsible accidental cat owners should do. They checked for a microchip, posted around, and tried to find an owner. Nobody claimed her, and their unexpected houseguest wasn't exactly pacing by the door waiting to return to her old life. She was perfectly comfortable right where she was.

That presented a slight problem: neither of these people had ever owned a cat.

Both had experience with dogs, so suddenly becoming feline pawrents came with some hesitation. Ash handled that by giving them approximately two days to fall completely in love with her.

One of her new hoomans somehow spent around $400 on their unplanned roommate almost immediately. Ash, meanwhile, settled in like she had been preparing for indoor life all along. She happily accepted some unseasoned chicken, found herself a comfortable place to nap, and waited while her new hooman headed out to buy food and a litter box. She certainly wasn't acting like a cat with plans to leave anytime soon.

She has since been named Ash Monday after the day she appeared, and her formerly dog-person pawrents are completely smitten.

We have to respect her technique. No shelter, no adoption application, no awkward meet-and-greet. Ash saw an open sliding door, walked inside, and gave two unsuspecting hoomans a crash course in cat ownership.

The Cat Distribution System didn't even bother with delivery this time. The package walked through the door herself.

Cats always make things in their own time, on their own terms. They're independent to a fault at times, but they compensate for that with intelligence and knowing when to ask for help.

It's known that cats have one of the most notorious reputations, to say the least, for being independent animals. And it doesn't exist for nothing - they evolved as solitary hunters and self-domesticated rather than being bred for strict obedience. Unlike pack animals, cats manage their own territory in the wild and rely on instinct for survival, viewing humans as safe co-habitants rather than pack leaders. And such an independent cat was Whitey the stray, before he decided on his own that help is welcome.

Like many cats, this big guy refused to receive help even at his lowest point. We'd say that's such a man move, but he's a cat - so that's more acceptable. But even with that, even with Whitey being unbearably independent and stubborn, even he accepted help in the end - to a roaring applause from the shelter people who were trying to catch him for months. He just eventually let them, of his own accord. Which is a Very Cat thing of him to do, setting the stage for his rescue completely on his terms.

They say it's impossible to help someone who's not willing to help themselves. Men, take notes - even a cat did it.

With all this independence and stubbornness, when a cat does decide that a human is allowed to show them love and care, it's a gold medal win. They didn't just win the right to care for the cat, they also won his heart. And winning the heart of a cat is worth everything. And that was especially true for Whitey, who ended up with one of the most glorious cat glow-ups we've seen recently. Seriously, Whitey, we're rootin' and tootin' for you so hard. You're doing great, sweetie.

From shelter hold to harness training, Lionel Richie is owning his new adventurous life in the Pacific Northwest like the champion we always knew he was.

I can relate to this new pawrent for a couple of reasons: Before making my transition into being a cat purrson, I was a dog guy. In my house growing up, we had a plethora of dogs rotating through at all times. Rescues would come in and out as they found furrever homes, and we always had at least one or two dogs of our own to keep the pack stable and manageable. I always thought I would emulate the life my parents raised me in: one full of wagging tails and slobbery tongues. 

But then, I met my first cat. She was a tiny kitten, so helpless and smol, and I took her in, and never looked back. She convinced me that cats were really the pets I wanted all along. She walked with me in a harness outside, slept next to me at night, and the best part was that it all came so naturally. I didn't really have to train her, she just went along with whatever I was doing because she wanted to do everything with me.

Some cats are just like that, and Lionel Richie is one of those cats. Our new pawrent was a professional dog boarder for 10 years. He went to the shelter one day to adopt a senior doggo, but Lionel Richie, a 5-month-old black tabby kitten, stole his attention (and his heart). He convinced his future pawrent to adopt him, and their story sounds a lot like ours did. Lionel Richie goes on harnessed walks, attacks his toes at night, and is showing him that cats aren't so meowsterious after all. 

Are they different than dogs? Absolutely. But are they inferior to dogs? Absolutely not. It all depends on where you are in life and what you want. A good cat will give you the best parts of a dog without most of the downsides of dog ownership, and with just as much, if not more, love, straight from one soul to another.

In a world of instant gratification and constantly seeking new sensations, take a meowment to enjoy the things that matter most to you - your cats.

You've probably heard this before, maybe even already today: "I want this now". Purrhaps your boss said it to you, demanding you finish your product or get them the results immediately. Maybe you said it to yourself when you passed by McDonald's on the way home and decided that you deserved a purrfectly binge-worthy snack after a stressful week. The thought definitely crossed your mind when you accidentally spent hours scrolling through TikTok instead of reading a book.

In today's world, we're always looking for the next thing that will bring us joy. But those things are fleeting and unsubstantial, leading us to constantly be on the lookout to consume more. There is one thing in your life, however, that will always bring you happiness at any time of the day. That thing is your favorite feline, your fluffy companion, AKA, your cat. 

Sure, cats are a lot of work. They can scratch up your furniture, have accidents outside the litter box, wake you up at all hours of the night, but they also bring you unconditional love, unlimited meowments of wholesome hilarity, and unrivaled cuteness. They're with you from the second you wake up to the instant you fall asleep, and then, even when you're tucked away in dreamland.

But there is one fatal flaw… they won't be here for furrever.

Our time together is limited by the cruel hands of fate, which is all the more reason to cherish every meowment with your cute kitties. It is much easier said than done, of course. Our cats are our everything. They are not just small and cute fluffballs living in our homes as decoration. They are our family. Our cats have personalities, they have hobbies, they have opinions. They make their opinions known. They live full lives, and they fill our hearts and our homes with more joy than we can even describe. Being told that our cats only have a little time left is our absolute nightmare. It is something that we don't even want to think about. Complete denial. For now, our kitties are happy and healthy and safe, and it is our duty to keep them happy and healthy and safe for however long they may have. And that is true until the very end. 

When the cat owners in today's story were told that they only had a few days left with their cat, they were just as heartbroken as any of us would be in that position. But they knew that they had a duty to their cat. They couldn't spend the cat's final days crying. Our cats feel our pain. They would know that something was wrong, and they would spend their last days stressed and worried about us. What this family did had to have been so difficult, but it was so, so worth it. Instead of sitting at home and crying, they took their kitty outside one last time to help him do one of his favorite things in the world - watch the sunset. And you can see in the kitty's eyes not only how happy he was that day but how happy he has been with his owners his whole life.

Even the "meantest" stray cat is one that can be won over. 

Cats are smart creatures, especially unspoiled stray ones. They know what is best for them. There is a reason that cats have domesticated themselves, that we didn't need to be involved in that in any way. They saw us, humans, realized that we have a soft spot for anything small and cute, and they knew that we can provide them with food and adoration without even making them stop doing their itty bitty crimes. And they took that deal. Because who wouldn't? And this self-domestication is not something that only happened in the past. It is something that happens every single day to this day. Every day, out in some corner of the world, a cat walks into a person's house and stays - furrever - leaving the stray life behind. 

Of course, some cats make that decision quickly, other cats never make that decision and stay strays forever, and other cats take their time deciding. That's the story of today's cat. And it makes sense. He was the rough man in the neighborhood. He had a reputation as the "mean" cat, the cat who breaks up fights between other cats. It was a cat not to be messed with. But of course, a human saw him, took a liking to him, and tried to gain his favor. Didn't work. Nope. But the cat knew that the option was there, and the day that he got too injured to keep fighting was finally the day that he decided to give humans a chance. 

Just like that, everything changed. Another cat being spoiled is a wonderful thing. And now that Shadow knew what it was actually like to live with and be loved by humans… he decided to share that joy with his stray friends.

At this point, we're starting to think maybe that's just how time works now. The world has been weird, the internet has been even weirder, and somehow there is always a new thing to be stressed about, a new thing happening online or in the world that we would rather just… not see. 

And in the middle of all that, the things we actually want to see online — cute animals, silly stories, funny cat pictures — can feel a little harder to find. Instead, we're constantly being served clickbait, ragebait, bad news, and approximately one million reasons that make us want to get off the internet basically forever. No thanks. We are online here for cats and for the cats alone. Specifically, we're here for cats being adorable, ridiculous, and completely incapable of taking anything seriously. You know, just cats being cats. 

That's why we've made it our mission here at ICHC to create a little corner of the internet where you can come whenever you need a break. Somewhere you don't have to doomscroll your way through endless nonsense just to find something that makes you smile. All the cutest cat pictures, the silliest stories about cats, and, of course, the one thing that can always brighten our day - some purrfect cat memes - are all right here for you. So forget the internet wasteland for a while. Come hang out with some cats instead. We promise that it is much, much nicer here. And you really do deserve the break.
