When a manager denies something from an employee, our first instinct is to take the employee's side, the one who doesn't have the power. But there are plenty of instances where the boss is actually the one making the right call.

It's not easy being a boss. The responsibility is staggering; you constantly find yourself juggling between being a supportive manager to your employees, while also ensuring you put the company's interests first. The balance between the two is almost impossible to find, because often an employee's needs don't align with what is best for the company; then you have to find a way to somehow make both happy, which rarely happens.

This means that managers often find themselves with tough decisions to make. Granted, we mostly see managers as the 'bad guy' because the decisions they end up making are often the worst, especially for the sake of the employee. But we have to admit that there are some managers out there who genuinely try to be fair and make the right call, even if their employees don't approve.

Speaking of approval, these two employees wanted to get their store manager's approval for a PTO request for a weekend, but they asked for it way too late. There were already two other employees who were approved for PTO on the same weekend, including the manager themselves. So, the manager had to make the difficult decision of simply saying no to the two workers, telling them they were going to have to come to work since there wouldn't be enough people to work that weekend without them. 

Since the two employees already bought tickets to a concert, they weren't going to take no for an answer and told the manager that even if they were denied the PTO, and will still call in sick that day. The manager informed them that if they did that, they would be fired.

Moms know best…that's why this one finally let the plump man in. 

We all know the taxing, daunting responsibilities of having kittens. Not everyone is equipped to handle taking care of a kitten. There's so much work that goes into it and it's a constant job that doesn't stop. You always have to make sure the kitten is okay, that he or she isn't tearing up furniture or falling off a bed. So when you have more than one kitten, it can feel like the world is crushing you. But that's where family comes in. With family members to help you, it's easier to have control over the situation and enough hands on deck to help. Like in the story here, where a family already has kittens and they recently got them. Then one day a sufficiently plump orange cat comes to their porch wearing a flea collar, so obviously he knows what it's like to be with people to some extent. They claim he has barely left the porch at all, and they even tried not feeding him initially. But alas, their efforts to deter the cat distribution system were met with mirth and laughter from the CDS higher powers. This orange fluff didn't leave, and so they decided enough is enough and that they should feed him anyway. No cat or person seems to be looking for him, so they want to take him to a vet. 

One family member in particular is very attached, and he wants to bring the cat inside the house. The caveat? You guessed it, the recent adoption of kittens. Is a fourth kitten the right decision? The back and forth between wanting to keep him and knowing the amount of intense work it'll be keeps the family from making a decision. When suddenly the mom of the house makes an executive decision that they can keep the cat, so they have scheduled a vet appointment and named him. Would you take in the little fluff ball? Sometimes we assume a lot of responsibility for things that aren't really our problem. And maybe it would be even better to not get involved at all. That is the case in the story below, at least from my perspective. I get the fact that when your partner is having a problem, you want to fix it, and you are going to do everything in your power to do it, even if you actually can't. You will at least try. And I think that is extremely sweet, but sometimes it can be too much. We need to accept that we can't fix everything and we shouldn't get involved in every single problem our partner has.

When you are in an adult, mature, and healthy relationship, you understand that the most important thing for it to work is not only love, but communication. Talking can be the most important part of a relationship. Yes, you have to love each other, of course, but if you are people who keep everything to themselves, then the relationship is never going to work. It needs to be honesty, boundaries, and companionship. And that is achieved by having serious and honest conversations.

That being said, it's important to have that kind of communication in every bond that you have, whether it's with friends, family members, or coworkers. You need to be expressing yourself, the good and the bad. So maybe, if you have a problem, you are the one taking care of it by communicating instead of having your partner try to fix it for you. You have responsibilities with every emotional bond that you have. And it's yours, and only your responsibility, to take care of those bonds and the people attached to them. It's nice to have a partner that supports you through your hard times, but you are in charge of fixing your own problems, like an adult. Is important that if you have a dispute with someone, you don't have your partner getting that emotional issue on their back, and instead you are the one working hard to restore it. 

Would you tell your coworker if they were about to get fired? 

Loyalty is an interesting thing in the workplace. It's important to demonstrate loyalty to your team and to your company, and that's how you get rewarded for your efforts, but your ultimate loyalty is to yourself. You don't want to compromise your values just for a sense of corporate pride. This will never bring you the rewards that you desire it to. Sometimes, though, over the course of a job, your allegiances are tested. Maybe your boss is wondering what you would do if a roadblock hit your path, and wants to test your ability to navigate it. These types of sneaky tests, though, are usually not a good idea. It's better to be up front and honest about your goals, no matter what they are. You can't expect people to read your mind and intuit everything that's going through it. The boss in this story, though, put their employee in a pretty awkward situation when she laid out one of these loyalty tests. 

Sometimes you happen upon a piece of information that you wish you hadn't received. You weren't looking for it, but there it is in your path, just waiting to mess everything up. You didn't choose to be in this gauntlet, but you landed in it nonetheless, and now you have to deal with the consequences. That's what happened to this employee, in a story that they shared to the work subreddit. Their boss did some pretty threatening hinting that one of their team was about to be let go. The subject of this termination had not been notified, though, and the employee was left wondering if they had done the right thing by saying nothing. It's not easy to sit on a piece of information that you know will mess up someone else's life. They were left wondering just what to do, and the internet provided some answers. 

Life doesn't always work out in the ways we want or expect, but we can still appreciate the love we've been given. 

Life is full of ambiguous meanings, deeper symbolism that we can barely understand. Sometimes it feels like we're living in a movie, and other times it can feel like we're just here for the ride. But when we have touches of love around us, it can keep us happy and going strong for longer than we expected. Sometimes all we have are memories to appreciate, and when we're slighted by life's cruelty, it's important to have those memories to comfort us on darker days. Found in the rain by the side of the road, a six week old kitten cries for comfort. In this Reddit story, the people who found her say they growled when they first fed her, and she growled ever since. She picked on the other two cats she lived with, and she was pretty stingy about people petting her, but snuggled up to them in bed every night. She had a favorite human, and it was the son. In two weeks this family was supposed to move. They were already preparing to make all of their cats indoor cats, but for the time being the cats were all indoor and outdoor. A common decision as a pet owner, but a potentially risky one. One dark day, a car hit her and she crossed the rainbow bridge. This family will never forget everything the cat did for them, and they know that this little kitten will be around playing in the garden forever. 

Try not to wear the same shirt color as the employee that work on the store if you want to avoid being mistaken for one.

The encounter when you are shopping at a store and confuse a normal shopper with an employee of the store because they are wearing the same color as the staff can be a little weird and uncomfortable. But I can't imagine how it could be for the person being mistaken. They are probably second-guessing their outfit thanks to that. Not because the uniform the employee wears is ugly, just because the whole situation is really bizarre. I always assumed that kind of mistake only happened to other customers, never to the actual employees. But I guess that wasn't exactly true according to the story in u/IDontWorkHereLady. 

It's funny how some people are so fixated on themselves that they do not pay attention to what's happening right next to them. And I don't mean this directly to the people who confuse customers as employees. That can be just a silly mistake. I mean this about the people who don't even hesitate to hear what other people have to say and just assume. Which, of course, just leads to them mistreating a person who didn't do anything wrong and didn't deserve it. In the story, a woman confused another customer with an employee. Nothing wrong with that, until she didn't let them speak, so this customer couldn't explain that they did, in fact, not work there. This woman just started to demand that she bring her supervisor for the supposed mistreatment.

The story ended with a quite funny ending, but I want to focus on another thing. The attitude the woman had. The entitlement that you have to have to assume something and then get mad at that assumption that didn't even have reason to be true in the first place is insane. This person wasn't a customer, but they didn't even have the space to explain it. This woman talked over them and wanted to scare them by calling for a manager who wasn't even their boss. So, yes, the story is funny, but the fact that some people are so self-absorbed that they wouldn't even notice something like this is crazy. 

"If I fits, I sits" - all cats ever. 

All cats are different, that is true, but there is one law that applies to all of them. If they fits, they sits. All of them. Each and every one. Place a box anywhere in the house, and your cat will sit in that box. It could be a box on the floor, on the couch, or on your kitchen table - it doesn't matter. They will find it and they will sit in it. 

And even those cats who don't have an affinity for boxes specifically will still be meowgically attracted to other containers. Anything that feels mildly constrictive is something they want to put their whole body into. Bags, hats, baskets, bowls, baby cribs. After a storm damaged a large backyard tree in Perrysburg, an 80-year-old neighbor warned the homeowners that she would hire someone to cut the branches she considered dangerous and sue them for the bill.

Should a homeowner be responsible for removing storm-damaged branches simply because a neighbor believes they may become dangerous? Or are they the neighbor's responsibility because they're on the other side of the fence?

Cats have the meowgical power of bringing people together. 

The cat community online is one of the strongest and most consistent that we have ever seen. For years - decades, even - cats have been ruling the internet with funny cat memes and cute cat pictures. Everyone knows this, we all acknowledge this, and not a single one of us fights it. Because cats are good. They're purrfect and pawsitive and uplifting. Cats have been bringing people together since the beginning of time. From giant statues in Egypt to people making memes together, all the way to reuniting exes. 

We always tell couples that adopting a cat together is a big responsibility. It is not something to be done spontaneously. If you're just dating, you may be having a good time now, but that doesn't mean that you will in a month or a year, and adopting a cat is a very long-term commitment. If you don't break up - fabulous. But if you do, the first one to suffer will be the cat. The cat doesn't understand relationship rules or breakups. All the cat knows that it's been adopted by two people, and then one of them is gone, and just because it's only one of the two doesn't make the abandonment any less painful. 

It's painful to the people involved in the relationship too. Custody battles over cats are horrible. You never forget the feline and what it brought into your life, not even ten years later, like the ex-couple in this story proved. After 10 whole years of silence, the ex who kept the cat they adopted together reached out to the one who didn't, told her that the kitty has only a few days left until she crosses the rainbow bridge, and offered that she take a walk with the kitty and say goodbye. And the ex was ecstatic. 

Doing the dishes will tear us apart

I can't believe how many romances end because of issues with housework. It seems that those differences and inconveniences end up eroding everything left of romance in the couple.

Frankly, after reading so many stories like this on Reddit, I'm kinda giving up on the idea of living together with a partner altogether. Is it possible to evolve to a society that accepts living in separate places without making it sound weird or noncommittal? Maybe it helps, and it keeps the fire burning. Maybe the other person doesn't have to compromise preferences they would've never wanted to in the first place, and things flow better that way!

Maybe you are very lucky, and your housework standards align with your partner's, and you can cohabitate just naturally; but for most of us, that is not the case. Attitudes that seem normal to you might completely disgust the other person, and imagine what that disgust can do to the fragile feeling of love over time.

For example, I live alone, and in my house, sometimes I let myself be messy because I know it won't bother anyone else but me, but I assume if I live with somebody else sometime, and I'm having a very stressful week, I won't be able to do that without causing some discomfort, and I honestly need the liberty sometimes.

Of course, everything is negotiable, but one should have a partner who is willing to negotiate, and more often than not, you sadly find out that your partner didn't want to negotiate anything and expected you to be his maid.

Either way, if the 'lazy' partner is deflecting guilt and telling the other that it is their fault for being angry, I would consider that a major red flag. Better late than never. Is it time to try to negotiate, or should she run for the hills?

You know what you need some more of in your life? Meowgic.

Every social media platform is filled with all of that ameowzing cat content, if you only look hard enough. But of course, we won't encourage you to go onto the social media battlefield any more than you already do. Firing a valuable employee is one way to learn a very expensive lesson…

A full-time esthetician was laid off effective immediately when her med spa announced it was temporarily closing. Two weeks later, her former employer started asking her to return for appointments. The problem? She's the only licensed person who can legally perform those treatments. Now, after already filing for unemployment, she's wondering why she should keep solving a staffing problem they created themselves.

I actually love when things like this happen to managers. Firstly, they open a spa and only four months later they decide to close that specific location and fire every single person that worked there. The one who got the most damage was the OP, because she was the only one who worked there full-time, doing services, taking appointments, and doing more administrative work.

Now, they decided to close the location, which is very sad, and she has to look for a new job as soon as possible. But here is when the funny part comes around. According to the story she shared in r/OfficePolitics, the same place contacted her because they still need them to take appointments, answer the phone, and basically keep doing all the work she did in the past.

But honestly, what exactly did they expect? You can't hand someone a letter saying their employment ends immediately and then casually call them two weeks later when you realize you still need their labor. If she was important enough to keep the appointments running, perhaps that should've crossed someone's mind before firing her.

The best part is that the OP isn't refusing to do a job she currently has. They're asking a former employee to return and fix the exact staffing problem they created by letting her go. At that point, helping them out isn't being a good employee anymore; it's doing a favor for the people who just left you unemployed.

Is it better to skip the niceties and receive the blunt truth with job interview feedback?

There are not many candidates these days who feel like they have an easy time when applying for and interviewing for jobs. Companies demand multiple rounds of interviews, presentations, and projects before they even so much as confirm what the salary is going to be. That is, if an applicant even gets picked out of the hundreds of AI-scanned resumes in the first place. The rejection can be brutal even without a detailed breakdown of a person's professional flaws.

However, there can be a desire to hear what hiring managers really think when somebody has had door after door shut in their face. What is it about them that means an interview does not end up translating into a job? It is probably a question that every job seeker has asked themselves after a rejection, especially if an interview seemed to go well. We all know that the corporate world often says one thing but means another, and this tendency only gets duplicitous when dealing with those who want to be hired. Once in a while, they need to hear it straight if they have any chance of landing a role.

Sometimes a kitten comes into your life from under a trash can, other times they will just sit patiently outside your bedroom window singing the songs of their people, waiting for you to wake up, pick them up and start your new life together. At least that was the case for the cute kitten in this story.

Being petty can be the best weapon against an entitled mother who loves to embarrass you.

I hate those mothers who have a constant need to be the center of attention. Their whole personality is based on main-character syndrome and a need to outstage their daughters. I always found it unfair that these mothers always had this awful attitudes towards their daughters but never their sons. And I really think all this is powered by jealousy. They resent their daughters, so they are constantly trying to bring them down to make themselves look better. But it ends up just looking sad. Nobody wants to see that. A grown woman making their child (no matter the age of the child) feel like they are less than their mother.

In stories like the one u/Master-Hunt6826 shares, I always side with the daughters, because they are right. They have to act petty or take revenge if they want their mothers to stop mistreating and embarrassing them. And the worst part is that these mothers usually get offended by these things. They feel like their daughter taking revenge is worse than what they did. But, in reality, they did deserve that shame they suffered. They were being mean, so they got a taste of their own medicine. That is how the world works. Props for those daughters who know how to stand up for themselves.

If you are a daughter who gets put down by her mother all the time and you are tired of feeling embarrassed. Then stand up. It may be hard and uncomfortable, but it is the only way to stop the cycle. Be petty, vengeful, and embarrass her in front of her friends. She will 100% take offense at it, but it's fine. Giving her a peek at what she does to you is the only way to end this. She will learn to stop it. All this, taking into account that you have already talked to her like a normal person and explained that what she does makes you feel bad. This petty thing only applies if you have talked to her and she continues to do it. In that case, yes, girl, be petty!

When management tightens the rules too far, employees might decide the easiest schedule to clear is their entire calendar.

Two unpaid days off every five months was already a tough sell. Telling employees they'd also have to work extra hours to compensate for using them made things worse. With no PTO, health insurance, or paid holidays to soften the deal, the dental hygienists made their own policy change: they signed resignation letters and left them together on the boss's desk.

This type of decision that comes more from management is caused by how crazy the job market is at the moment. The same way that hiring managers take twice as long to give a response, leaving candidates waiting for weeks, managers can play around with PTO and lack of benefits since they know how hard it's to find a new job.

It's very sad, but it's the reality. I don't know what happened that changed the whole spectrum when it comes to work and looking for a job, so now we have managers who are extremely selfish and can even remove the normal amount of PTO, as if it's a normal decision. But they not only left the employees with only two days off, but they also told them to make up for those missed appointments… meaning, work double.

But I'm glad to say that there's light at the end of the tunnel because most of those employees quit on the spot. And that's a great sign: they are letting management know that those rules are insane, and that no job market is as crazy as continuing to work in a place where rights are forgotten and people aren't allowed to go on vacation. The story shared by u/pathces-rob is a great example of standing up for your rights and claiming what you deserve.

Summer + weekend = don't bother me I'm scrolling cat memes basking in the sun. 

The thing about weekends is that they're your time. Your time to do whatever it is you would want to do. If you want to lay in bed for two days, no one is going to stop you. If you want to play video games on the couch while your cat watched, purring next to you, and ordering food delivery because you're too lazy to get any food yourself, then how about it! It's the best feeling to wake up without alarms, without plans, and with a whopping 48 hours to do what you want all week. The weekend in winter hits differently since a lot of people are deterred by the rain, snow, sleet, or hail to stay inside as well. And the thing about cats is that they're here to indulge in winter dreamland with you. 

Cats are so multifaceted. They're chaotic, capricious, and mischievous one moment, and purring softly next to your hand, nudging you with their little heads the next. They always manage to bring a smile to our faces, even when they misbehave. For cat pawrents, going home to your little furball is one of the best feelings. Your rituals together feel like a requirement to enjoy the evening. Weekends are even more enjoyable as a cat pawrent because it means two whole days with your pookie. Trying to make a coworker take the fall is risky when the cameras tell a very different story.

A 22-year-old warehouse employee spent months picking up the slack for an increasingly lazy coworker. Things changed when $1,200 in equipment went missing, and that same coworker claimed he had handed it to him. The item was eventually found, but the betrayal stuck. Later, suspicious behavior prompted a camera check that exposed the coworker stealing company property and apparently doing it for months. 

I've always said that having a good relationship with your coworkers is fundamental if you want to have a good time at work. And I think that in this case, both employees were actually good buddies. They would talk about personal stuff, go and grab pizza every day… all in all, they had a good bond. That's why the betrayal feels very hard on u/Enough_Excitement121.

Now, the people we work with don't stop being just that: people we work with. And even though there're cases when we can find very good friends at work, there're others where coworkers and employees just want to protect themselves and want to keep the job as much as possible, and this is what Mason did. I don't think we wanted to blame the OP, but he protected himself by blaming him for the stolen equipment he had been taking home and selling. 

What makes everything even worse is that the OP had spent months helping Mason whenever he fell behind, even when it became obvious that he was taking advantage of him. He could have reported the long breaks, the unfinished work, and all the excuses much earlier, but he chose not to. In the end, Mason wasn't fired because someone wanted revenge. He was fired because the cameras finally showed what he had been doing when he thought nobody was paying attention. 

Anyways, this is a valuable lesson for all of us. While we can find some good coworkers, maybe there will be others a bit more selfish and will only focus on their behavior and performance, and won't hesitate to blame us if they have the chance.

Growing up in the country can be a mysterious and enlightening experience. The vastness, the lack of modernity, and the rural nature can really play a big role in someone's values and personality. Living in the country is like having an adventure everyday. You have to walk more to get places, and you could even feel like the world is your oyster. Imagine being a 10 year old girl and growing up in the country. In the story here, they were the only family in the neighborhood who had a fenced-in yard. One night, their dog, Jewel, was outside for the bathroom as usual when she suddenly started barking. It wasn't her normal bark, it was a scared and urgent bark. The little girl's mom calls Jewel, but to her surprise she doesn't come, so the whole family goes out to get her since they thought she was injured. They didn't find an injured Jewel, but instead they found two baby kittens crying in the backyard. One was orange, and the other grey. The orange had some attitude, but the grey was delightfully friendly. They weren't sure if there was a mom looking for them, so they look them to the porch, brought them some food, and waited until the next morning. 

The next morning, the kittens were still there. They decided to contact the grandma to see what she had to say. They discussed their options, and that's when the little girl named each cat, and decided they weren't going anywhere. The grey one they named Parry, and ended up keeping her, but the orange they gave to a friend. It's always so wholesome and interesting to reminisce about how your cat found you, and that's what makes this story so adorable. The little girl is now an 18 year old teenager, but she can still look back and reflect on her luck that day. When you live in the country, it's always precious to find beauty in everyday things.
