'Stop being a drama queen': Loyal employee gets accused of stealing $40 from the register, hostile manager gaslights them

Mon, 01/29/2024 - 15:00

A theft accusation is a tough burn to come back from– especially in the workplace. As a server in a restaurant, you automatically assume responsibility for all of the incoming cash into the restaurant, meaning that you're the one honorable barrier between what's left in the register at the end of the night and what comes home with you in your pocket. Because of this delicate balance of trust, a server's credibility is a fragile, yet desperately important thing to maintain if you're a restaurant manager. You wouldn't want to scare off the last of the good ones over a feeble hunch… right?

But that's exactly what one hot-headed manager did in our next story.

Update: Employee refuses to change password, places the blame on another company: 'She was fired on the spot'

Mon, 01/29/2024 - 14:00

Out of the many reasons an employee could get fired, this is one of the most preventable (and silly) reasons.

It's never been more important to have strong passwords to protect yourself on the internet. Maybe 20 years ago it was okay to choose "password1234" as your entry code, but that'll never fly with today's advanced technology. As tech evolves, it requires more creativity to get into someone's email or computer. Even people who have had their passwords stolen before don't always take the proper precautions.

It's easy to ignore best practices when you're in a rush. Apparently, you're supposed to activate two-factor authentication or use apps for that purpose, for as many online accounts as you can. That gets really annoying really fast, but it's worth it to keep your online privacy. Apparently no one told that to this employee! She seemed so protective of her passwords that it ended her career.

You can check out this great story below. The OP also added in several updates, complete with additional information in the comments section.

After that, check out these people who shared their funniest petty revenge stories—like one dude who erased all of his cheating wife's TV shows and recorded "Cheaters" instead.

'I love you, but I really want a Tyrannosaurus': 20+ ridiculous things sleep talkers said, according to their partners

Mon, 01/29/2024 - 13:00

This one goes out to all the significant others out there who have to endure their partners' sleep-talking every single night. You folks are the real heroes!

Seriously, it's not easy to date a sleep talker. It's almost like dating two different individuals. There's the person you're spending your days with, the person with whom you have fallen in love. And then there's the person they become when you turn off the lights. Yes, it's like dating Gollum.

Once your partner is asleep, they might reveal all the anxieties on their mind with zero filter or they might just word-vomit a ton of gibberish that makes absolutely no sense. Regardless, these Redditors have kept a running list of the ridiculous things their sleep-talking partners have uttered overnight. We compiled this list from this r/AskReddit thread. Keep scrolling below for the best ones. For more, here are some crazy comments doctors have made to their patients.

'[They] saw dollar signs': Customer calls police after mechanic refuses to return their car

Mon, 01/29/2024 - 12:00

How could a quick mechanic visit go so wrong? This dude was left stunned after a shop took their car, and then didn't want to give it back.

As a car owner, you get to know your vehicle pretty well. The more time you spend driving to the grocery store or to your friend's house, the more you'll notice its noises and smells. If your car makes lots of whining sounds or starts leaking fumes into the interior, it might be time to get that looked at. Although some people drive around with car issues, check engine light or not, until the car can't move another inch. Others, like this person try to be proactive about their vehicle's problems. This one seems especially important: u/TrueHalfCrack writes that their trusty 2005 Santa Fe was squeaking when they started braking. Of all the issues to get checked out with haste, a steering or brake issue is at the top of that list.

Mechanics realize that many car owners arrive at their shop with zero knowledge of why their car's having so many issues. Some mechanics are on the level, but others just want to make a quick buck. This guy got such incredible revenge on this mechanic that he'll probably never try those tactics again!

Next up, this person left the internet stunned by charging a $200 "meal fee" for every wedding guest… including family members.

'Don't mess with the wrong tenants': Landlord ignores maintenance requests for two months, tenant fires back with steep fines

Mon, 01/29/2024 - 11:00

There's nothing like seeing the look on a landlord's face after they have been majorly called out for being entirely unresponsive. It's somehow a mix between a look of feeling betrayed and the look of a child who is having a really hard time pretending they didn't just break the rules. But all landlords who ignore tenants' maintenance requests to the point that the living conditions become, well, unlivable should know better.

This thread was posted to Reddit's r/pettyrevenge subreddit by u/New-Morning-3184, who had contacted the broker and landlord with a list of areas in his newly rented apartment that needed to be checked and cleaned prior to his family's move-in. Well, as one might expect, none of those areas were looked at in advance and OP moved into a complete mess of a space. After numerous attempts to rectify the situation and to get maintenance people to come over and finish the job, OP was left no choice but to call the city and to force his landlord to do his job. Keep scrolling below to see how the revenge got even more petty when it came to the repair of OP's front door.

'You won't be needed in the future:' Restaurant manager fires dishwasher after first shift for 'red flags' he deemed wholeheartedly fireable

Mon, 01/29/2024 - 10:00

It's not easy landing a job these days, the workforce is all kinds of crazy currently. So if and when you do manage to land a job, you should probably hold onto it the best you can, right? If it is a horrible work environment, the, by all means, quit. But if everything is going along just fine and you're getting paid and enjoy your coworkers, then why would you mess that up?

Single Mom Gives $2,000/per Semester to Her Spoiled Daughter's College Tuition, Girl Complains ‘[Mom] Should Be Paying More’

Mon, 01/29/2024 - 09:00

College is expensive, yet it's widely believed that to be a successful (employed) adult, you need a degree. As if a little piece of paper with fancy script and the name of the overpriced university you attended is going to prove that you're responsible. In our next story, one college girl proves that there are a lot of life lessons and privileges that are completely ignored during your college years– especially if you're an entitled brat.

'I move to impeach all of you': Determined parents battle HOA's 40-year-old rules to repair their roof

Mon, 01/29/2024 - 08:00

This family decided to stand up for what they believed in… and what they believed in was their right to put a roof on their own home

When you're deciding where you want to live, there are plenty of factors. But one that people don't always take into consideration at first is how the weather will impact them. Now, if you're going to live somewhere like Florida, you'll have to keep that in mind right from the get-go. The weather can be warm and sunny plenty of the time. But it rains multiple times per day there, and the more extreme weather conditions are no joke. Some houses flood yearly! As hurricane season approaches, those in the path of these natural phenomena have to take great caution to protect their homes.

Florida residents can put up window protections and seal their houses as best as they can. Having a good, non-leaky roof wouldn't hurt either. That's exactly what this family had in mind when they decided to upgrade their metal roof. In fact, their neighbors also thought it was a good idea, and wanted to improve their own homes in the same way. The only people who pushed back on the idea were the board members of the local HOA

Check out this incredible pro revenge story. Then, read about the funniest and weirdest reasons these workers got fired, like one dude who got fired from a sandwich shop because he wouldn't stop "drinking the sauces."

War-Veteran Mechanic Wins a $400,000 Settlement After Calling His Dirtbag Ex-Boss's Bluff

Mon, 01/29/2024 - 07:00

Not many of us have the financial luxury to sue anybody. Even if we have a case of a hostile workplace or cut wages or unpaid overtime, usually the cost of a lawyer is enough to dissuade us from pursuing justice. Unfortunately, this is how a lot of blue-collar and minimum-wage employees are exploited time and time again. But there are stories of fabled heroes standing up for the little man, where justice prevails and dirtbag bosses get exactly what they deserve.

This is that kind of story.

'They paid thousands for 4 unused vacation days': Employee sues boss for gaslighting them about their remaining annual leave

Mon, 01/29/2024 - 06:00

If there's one thing employers hate, it's benefits; even the greatest employer or boss has likely at one point begrudgingly approved a PTO request or ticked off additional PTO for their staff. And I'll admit, as a manager, when you see a PTO request, sometimes your intrusive thoughts kick in… "Do they really need this week off?" "How about the next one?" "Can't your brother just reschedule their wedding?"

Obviously, this is ridiculous, but show me a manager who hasn't had these thoughts, and I'll show you a liar. It's just one of those minor inconveniences that you put up with for your staff for their happiness and well-being… and also because it's a mandatory legal obligation.

Ignoring this mandatory legal obligation would be silly—you probably just wouldn't do it. But, this manager tried to, and paid the price… A price far greater than their employer would have paid for those four days of leave.

'You must be on camera 100% of the time': Guy gets fired two hours into new job, gets roasted online

Mon, 01/29/2024 - 05:00

Getting fired on Day One is almost admirable. You have to be spectacularly ill-suited and woefully unfit to the position to mess things up that quickly and that obviously. Perhaps it's not your fault. Perhaps the recruiters did not make themselves clear from the get-go about what the expectations were. Perhaps both parties misread signals about one another's skills and preferences. Or perhaps it actually was your fault all along and you were fired for a reason.

The lattermost scenario may be rare in this day and age; usually, there are red flags on the part of the employer that one can point out in the recounting of these tales of unjust dismissals. However, no matter how much this Redditor tried to conceal what went down, he simply could not hide the fact that he made a major oversight on the very first day and made it look like he was unfocused and unprofessional.

'Stop acting like you're important!': Performance collapses when boss tells worker to do their own job instead of the extra work they had been doing

Mon, 01/29/2024 - 04:00

Being told to just do your job is kind of fair; it is your job, after all, and the reality of the world is that at some point, it's going to be necessary for you to step in line and let someone else call the shots. Still, is it really fair to say, "Just, do your job," when it's not really your job in the first place? Rather just that someone else has decided that your job is to do their job too? There's a reason why your boss is paid more to go along with the responsibility that has been handed to them, and handing that responsibility off to your lowest-paid team members isn't really what anyone had in mind when they put you in that role.

Regardless, if you were just told to "Just do your job" by someone who wasn't doing theirs, you might not take that so well. And when they appointed someone else to do the job you supposedly weren't doing, only to have things come crashing down, you might take some solace in that.

'I swear I’m not cheap': Waiters discuss what are 'reasonable' and 'unreasonable' tipping habits in the U.S.

Sun, 01/28/2024 - 18:00

When you place an order for pick up—which means you are going to the store, they are handing you a bag of your food, and then you take it home yourself—are you leaving a tip? How much of a tip? Less than the usual 20% or none at all? What about when it's a delivery or sit-down meal? Do you take out of your tip when a sauce is forgotten or utensils missing?

It is day 342 of the longest January of existence and everyone is too darn cold. At first, the charms of winter delight and surprise us, reminding everyone to cozy up to their heater, tuck in their shirts and keep their ears warm, but society has been up to their gills in snow, arctic blizzards, and calamitous weather– We're over it.

‘You could have programmed the correct number, but you didn’t': Woman gets back at person who fails to program correct number into phone while inquiring about horse

Sun, 01/28/2024 - 16:00

Sometimes you punch in a number on your phone to call someone, and a total stranger ends up on the other line. You called the wrong number, no big deal. Then you do it again, and again… and again.

Until the person on the other side is wondering why it's so hard to call the RIGHT number. It's a fair question. This woman was contacted via text 5 times over the span of a year and a half, and it was always the same person inquiring about the same thing… A horse. The woman, OP, had no idea what they were talking about and was getting annoyed, as each time, the texts arrived in the middle of the night, waking her up. Finally, she decided it was time for a little payback… She devised a clever plan to make sure this person would never text her again… And let's just say that it totally worked.

After you're done reading, check out this company that shut down a client's entire server after the client denied one of their technicians access to important equipment.

'We're about to take [your horse] out back... Old Yeller style': Guy pranks a wrong number after being pestered for months for updates on the stranger's horse

Sun, 01/28/2024 - 15:00

Believe it or not, caller ID was invented in the 80's, but it still took several decades to figure out how to completely block an incoming call. Imagine all the tedious hardships that would have been avoided if blocking a phone number had been a thing sooner? There certainly wouldn't be as many horror movies dedicated to villains in masks hiding behind an unknown number.

In modern times, it's easy to block a phone number. One-click and you can revoke a person's ability to contact you ever again. But in this age of infinite connection, where's the fun in that? In our next story, a guy gets payback against someone who repeatedly ignores his insistence that they have the wrong number. After months of being bothered with endless questions about a pet horse, he gets creative with his own technique to 'block' any further contact.

Scroll for all the petty details of how a guy protected his privacy and effectively blocked unwanted contact for good.

'Cancel my service now, I will go to your competitors': Australian woman loses internet access for two years

Sun, 01/28/2024 - 14:00

This service provider tried a lot of different ways, but they couldn't convince one customer that she was wrong

As case worker at an internet service provider, this person had to work with all types of customers. If you've worked in a customer service role for even a day, you'll know that people are not always kind to the person on the other end of the phone. In fact, some people are under the impression that the louder they talk, the better their results will be.

This person, u/JimmyRecard, told a story of malicious compliance that happened when they just could not get through to a customer. It seems like a bad situation all around. The customer couldn't get her internet to work, so she called the provider for help. But then the provider couldn't help her either, and they wanted to charge hundreds of dollars to send someone out to help her. I'd be upset, too if I was her! The OP mentions that the customer didn't seem to be following their instructions to troubleshoot the internet connection. Instead, she just told the OP about her son, who worked in IT, while explaining that she had a brand new router that wouldn't work. There are no winners in this story, just an unhappy customer and a call center worker who really couldn't help her in any meaningful way.

'When people start randomly talking to you at work': 25+ people's pettiest pet peeves

Sun, 01/28/2024 - 13:00

Sure, people's various passions, interests, and worldviews make them unique individuals, but sometimes it's your specific pet peeves that make you truly stand out. For instance, there are a lot of people in this world who are interested in science fiction movies, but not a lot of people in this world who are annoyed to no end by the breathing patterns of their nearest coworkers. We all would like to think that it's the positive aspects of our personalities that make us special, but we should be honest with ourselves: what frustrates us can make us just as interesting, if not more so.

These folks shared their pettiest pet peeves via this thread on r/AskReddit. These pet peeves range from annoying colloquialisms to people with self-awareness issues. Keep scrolling below and share your pet peeves in the comments section below. When you're done reading, here are some funny stories about adults having temper tantrums.

'No one ever admitted to [it]': Clueless rich kids take shortcut, cause school evacuation in the middle of the night

Sun, 01/28/2024 - 12:00

For some teens, college is the first time they're out on their own, and it really shows. It's the first big step towards independence for many kids. After years of living with their parents, college freshmen suddenly realize they have to fend for themselves.

A lot of colleges make this as easy as possible for the new students, especially for those who choose to live in a dorm. There's usually a nice cafeteria where they can get hot meals, and many colleges provide laundry on-site. Plenty of dorms have shared kitchen spaces for students who want to make some late-night ramen noodles. And since these spaces are designed for people of all walks of life, there are usually signs with warnings about how to use the appliances

No matter how many safety meetings are held or how many signs are posted, there are always a few teens who cannot figure things out. There's always at least one person who pours half a bottle of detergent into a washer, and then wonders why it's overflowing with bubbles. You might get a kid who has no idea how to cook the aforementioned ramen noodles, and cooks them for so long that the water evaporates and scorches the food. These well-meaning but clueless kiddos can really wreak some havoc if they're not supervised… just like the students in the story below.

'I don't know how that makes sense from a business perspective': Employee discovers loophole in company's time-tracking policy, extending sick leave

Sun, 01/28/2024 - 11:00

Occasionally, employees discover a loophole within their company's various policies that will make the experience of working at said company all the more palatable. When one discovers a loophole like this, it's important to tell no one. You don't want people catching on, not even your work husband/wife. You just keep doing you, until your scheming comes to light. Most of the time, management is so clumsy and disorganized that nothing ever really does come to light.

This thread was posted to Reddit's r/MaliciousCompliance subreddit by an employee who had to call in sick for several days. When they felt well enough to work half days remotely again, their manager started giving them a hard time about not filling their time-tracking sheet well enough. That's when OP realized that this business just so happened to prioritize sick days over working half days because of the messiness of the time-tracking policy. Cue malicious compliance!
